Crypto lending includes two different positions: supplying assets to earn yield, and borrowing money against digital-asset collateral. A depositor wants principal and interest returned; a borrower wants to settle the debt and recover collateral. Risks depend on the product and legal relationship, not just the platform name.

Before borrowing, review Ledn’s Bitcoin-backed loan terms. Before depositing for yield, Rates and Fees Schedule (checked 26 October 2026). Use the agreement for your product, not a general safety claim about a brand.

The failures of BlockFi and Celsius in 2022 show why those distinctions matter. A familiar brand and an attractive rate are not substitutes for understanding asset use, liquidity and recovery rights.

Regulatory action after a failure does not guarantee that the next product is safe. Assess the present agreement, counterparties and evidence. A loss may be financial, operational or a delay in access even when the quoted interest continues to look attractive.

This guide preserves the practical benefits of lending and borrowing while explaining the questions and safeguards needed to evaluate each risk.

What is crypto lending?

Supplying crypto to earn interest can retain exposure to the asset while introducing borrower, platform or protocol risks. It does not remove market volatility. Returns come from an economic activity—such as lending—not merely from moving coins into an account.

Crypto-backed loans can be viewed as a subset of crypto lending. They enable you to borrow money or stablecoins using your crypto as collateral. You benefit from the value of your crypto holdings without selling them. Instead, you deposit your crypto into a lending platform or service, which then provides you with a loan in your desired currency. The loan amount is determined by the value of your collateral. When you pay back the loan, plus the interest, you get your collateral back.

Our borrowing guide explains the collateral-backed side; do not confuse pledging BTC to borrow with lending BTC out for yield.

How Does Crypto Lending Work?

In a yield arrangement, you provide assets under terms defining how they may be deployed, how interest is calculated and when you can withdraw. Some returns are variable, and repayment is subject to counterparty performance.

For a hypothetical calculation—not a current Ledn BTC offer—suppose 2 BTC is lent for 90 days at a 6% simple annual rate using a 365-day year. Gross interest is 2 × 0.06 × 90/365 = approximately 0.02959 BTC, not 6% of principal for the quarter. A borrower or platform must still return the principal and interest, and their dollar value changes with BTC.

For a collateral-backed loan, you pledge eligible assets and receive accepted proceeds after verification, approval and settlement. The offer controls permitted use, amount, cost and maturity. Default or an LTV trigger can cause a collateral sale; repaying the balance and charges releases what remains under the process.

Is Crypto Lending Safe?

Crypto lending comes with varying levels of risks. These differ according to the platform and product you select.

A P2P arrangement and a managed yield account can expose you to different borrowers, controls and legal rights. Neither label proves which is safer. A product called a savings account can still be an uninsured credit exposure rather than a bank deposit.

No lending product removes all risk, and some outcomes can involve losing all principal. Match the exposure to what you can afford to lose or have unavailable—not just the advertised return.

Separate the main risk categories

Separate the main risk categories
RiskWhat can go wrongWhat to investigate
CounterpartyAn entity cannot meet its obligationsWho owes you, how funds are used and applicable legal claims
CustodyAssets are lost, misused or unavailableCustodians, controls, permissions and segregation
LiquidityWithdrawals or exits cannot happen when neededLockups, redemption rights and liquidity constraints
Market and depegBTC collateral falls or a stablecoin loses its pegExposure, buffers and realistic stress scenarios
LiquidationPledged assets are sold under loan termsLTV, triggers, monitoring and repayment options
TechnologyA contract, oracle, wallet or operational process failsDependencies, permissions, audits and incident procedures

These risks overlap. A market shock can weaken a borrower, reduce collateral value and increase withdrawal demand at the same time. A checklist is useful only if it captures those interactions.

The Main Risks With Crypto Lending

Before you get started with crypto lending, it's important to understand the potential risks involved. In this section, we'll explore the key risks, so you can make informed decisions.

Lack of Legal Clarity

Rules vary by jurisdiction, legal entity and product. Registration, licensing, securities treatment and consumer-credit obligations answer different questions. Verify the entity providing the service and the permissions relevant to that service; a registration is not an endorsement or deposit guarantee.

After the industry failures of 2022, legal and regulatory treatment has continued to change. A provider's old geographic availability or entity description may no longer apply to a new account, renewal or product. Check the current agreement rather than assume that all crypto activity has the same legal classification.

Insolvency risk

One risk of crypto lending is the possibility of losing part or all of your funds if the platform you select goes bankrupt.

When you lend your crypto to a platform, you trust them with your assets. There's a possibility that the platform may face financial instability or operational issues, leading to insolvency.

In the event of a platform going bankrupt or unexpectedly shutting down, investors may lose part or all of their funds.

The 2022 distress involved different businesses, including FTX and Alameda, Three Arrows Capital, Core Scientific, Celsius and Voyager. An exchange, trading firm, miner and lending business do not have identical balance sheets; examine the exposure your own contract creates instead of treating the names as one risk category.

Supervision and risk controls can reduce particular exposures, but neither prevents every liquidity shortage, fraud or operating failure.

Ledn’s Growth Accounts have product-specific structures and disclosures. Ring-fencing can separate defined exposures under legal documents; it does not eliminate insolvency risk or guarantee immediate recovery. Identify who owes you and what you can claim if the relevant entity fails.

Proof of Reserves can provide independent evidence about specified balances at a snapshot date and allow covered-client inclusion checks. It does not establish all off-chain obligations, future solvency or immediate liquidity. Read the scope, entities and limitations; a report cannot itself stop a run or ensure withdrawals.

Fees are not always transparent

Compare interest or yield after origination, administration, withdrawal, conversion and network charges. Ask whether a fee is deducted from proceeds, added to debt or paid separately, and whether interest accrues on it. The same headline rate can produce different usable proceeds and repayment costs.

DeFi rug pulls

A rug pull is a fraud in which promoters or controllers extract value and abandon users. It can involve liquidity removal, privileged contract functions or misleading token claims. It is different from an accidental code exploit. Check who can change contracts, move treasury assets or withdraw liquidity, and do not treat a published audit as a guarantee of honest conduct.

Security breaches

Cybercrime and hacking are risks. If a security breach leads to the loss of your funds, there is no guarantee of compensation.

Volatility

The value of your assets might drop while you’re lending them out.

If you take out a loan, and the value of your collateral drops, you might have to add more crypto collateral.

Established assets such as BTC can still fall sharply. Liquidity, concentration and collateral thresholds determine how a decline affects the position; a familiar ticker does not provide a safe LTV.

Benefits of Crypto Lending

Yield and collateral-backed liquidity can be useful, but the potential benefits do not require taking a risk that does not fit your finances. Keeping assets unpledged or declining a yield offer are valid choices.

In this section, we’ll run through some of the benefits of crypto lending.

Earn Passive Income

Interest can provide a return without actively trading the asset. You still need to understand its source, monitor product changes and account for the possibility of loss or delayed withdrawal.

Competitive Interest Rates

Ledn’s current USDC and USDT Growth table lists 5% APY below 100,000 units of each asset and 6% on the excess, variable and subject to change. Those are tiered balances, not 6% on every deposit. An uninsured lending return should not be compared with an insured bank rate without accounting for the different risks.

For borrowers, compare actual APRs, fees and maturity—not an assumption that every crypto loan is cheaper. Ledn’s pricing table lists 10.99% below $250,000; 10.49% from $250,000; 9.99% from $500,000; 9.75% from $1 million; and 9.25% from $2 million. The rates guide compares specific offers.

Loan Terms are Flexible

Flexibility is contractual. Some deposits have lockups or withdrawal limits; some loans have fixed maturity or minimum-interest charges. Ledn's standard 12-month loan has no required monthly payments and no early repayment penalty, but interest accrues and the final obligation remains.

Barriers to Entry are Low

Minimums vary. Ledn’s public BTC-loan minimum is $500 with typical 50% initial LTV, subject to location-specific higher minimums or purpose rules. Check the actual product rather than assume low entry requirements across the sector.

Privacy and verification

A collateral-based product may require different financial information from a bank loan, but regulated providers still collect identification and compliance records. Public blockchain activity can also reveal transfers. Review data handling and access controls rather than assume a crypto loan is anonymous.

No Credit Checks

Ledn does not use a traditional credit check for its BTC-backed product. That can help a holder whose wealth is concentrated in BTC, but identity, eligibility and repayment resources still matter. Other providers may use different underwriting.

Borderless Transactions

Digital assets can move internationally, but product access, bank routes and permitted purposes remain subject to local restrictions. A network's reach does not mean every resident can use every account or loan.

What depositors should ask

Identify the activity that generates your return. A yield paid from lending, trading incentives or liquidity provision involves different counterparties and failure modes. Ask whether you are exposed to a particular borrower, a pooled book, a protocol or a provider’s broader balance sheet.

Ledn describes its stablecoin Growth funding as primarily supporting BTC-backed retail lending. Read the current disclosures and terms for that exposure. Overcollateralisation can reduce losses in some scenarios but cannot make every liquidation, liquidity or operational outcome certain.

USDC and USDT also have issuer and redemption risks independently of Ledn. A lending platform does not remove those simply by paying interest on the token. See USDC versus USDT.

What borrowers should ask

Check the debt currency, interest treatment, maturity, liquidation rules and permitted use of collateral. A falling BTC price raises LTV even if you make no new borrowing. Interest can also increase the amount owed.

Do not build a repayment plan that only works if Bitcoin rises or a refinancing offer remains available. Keep enough operational access to act, but recognise that alerts and automation cannot guarantee prevention of liquidation during rapid moves.

The loan-management guide and partial repayment explanation address actions a borrower can evaluate before stress occurs.

Understand the limits of safeguards

Ring-fencing is a legal and structural arrangement whose effect depends on documents and applicable law. It is not a promise that insolvency can never affect access or recovery. Likewise, a reserve attestation has a specific scope and reporting date; it is not a guarantee of future solvency or immediate liquidity.

A security-controls report and an insurance policy answer different questions. Check the named entities, covered events, exclusions and beneficiaries rather than assuming every customer loss is insured. FDIC guidance distinguishes insured deposits from crypto assets.

Ledn’s loan collateral is not lent out to generate yield, but permitted re-posting under funding arrangements is a separate issue. Read custody models, rehypothecation and Proof of Reserves together.

How to Evaluate a Lower-Risk Fit

Lending for Passive Income (AKA Saving)

For yield, evaluate the specific account rather than call a category the safest. Ask where returns come from, how principal is used and what can delay or prevent its return.

When you deposit your crypto assets into a savings account, the platform lends those assets to borrowers and pays you interest on your holdings. Interest rates are determined by factors such as the lending platform's business model, market conditions, and the type of cryptocurrency you deposit.

Crypto savings accounts are often provided by centralized exchanges, lending platforms, or dedicated crypto platforms. The best platforms offer account management tools, user-friendly interfaces, and the ability to easily deposit or withdraw funds.

Ledn currently lists stablecoin Growth products rather than a new BTC Growth offer. Stablecoin lending introduces issuer and redemption risk as well as platform exposure. These are not government-insured deposits. Read the current terms, withdrawal rights and geographic restrictions before transferring assets.

Borrowing against collateral

For a loan, establish the debt currency, maturity, LTV thresholds, collateral rights and release process. Ledn’s management tools include notifications at 70% and 75% and funded Auto Top-Up at 70% toward 68%. At 80%, liquidation is automatic and irreversible with a 0.50% trade spread. Reports and controls inform the decision; they do not remove this obligation.

Regional changes and maturity

For Brazil clients, changes from 30 October 2026 stop new Growth deposits while existing balances may remain and earn. That notice is not a global retirement of Growth.

For Ledn loans, from 1 January 2027 accrued interest and fees must be cleared at maturity or mid-term refinancing. Eligible principal may renew under the offered conditions, including LTV below 65%; stablecoin balances and, if needed, BTC sales may settle charges and bring LTV to 64%. Renewal is not a guaranteed repayment plan.
