CeFi vs DeFi: Meaning and Key Differences

Ledn has over $11 billion in loan originations since 2018 and counting!
CeFi and DeFi describe different ways financial services are organised. CeFi relies on a business to provide an account-based service; DeFi uses blockchain protocols and smart contracts. The useful distinction is who controls each part of the transaction and what you must do yourself.
Neither label answers whether a specific product is suitable. Borrowing, lending for yield and trading each create different obligations—even when they happen inside the same app. Start with the activity, then trace the people, contracts and assets involved.

What is CeFi and How Does it Work?
Centralized finance, or CeFi, is where a company offers services that are provided by a centralized organization. This means that there are humans who control the service and keep it running. All traditional finance is centralized, including banks and stock exchanges. However, many cryptocurrency exchanges and lending providers, such as Ledn, are also CeFi. With a CeFi company, you place your trust in a team of individuals who manage your digital assets and take care of them.
What is DeFi and How Does it Work?
DeFi uses smart contracts on blockchain networks to execute financial operations. People still develop software, operate interfaces, propose governance changes and maintain supporting infrastructure. Control differs by protocol: some parameters can change through governance, some contracts are immutable and some systems retain administrator powers. Read those powers rather than assume “decentralised” means nobody can intervene. Curve, for example, is associated with decentralised exchange and liquidity-pool infrastructure; it should not simply be described as a generic loan company.
Key Differences Between CeFi and DeFi
The central distinction is where decisions, signing authority and obligations sit. A CeFi provider operates a business relationship under its terms; DeFi contracts enforce specified on-chain rules. Both can rely on external people and services. A smart contract can hold assets that you cannot freely withdraw while debt is outstanding, and a centralised service can use several custodians rather than one wallet.
Let’s break this down:
- CeFi commonly provides account-based operations and legal agreements; custody and funding arrangements vary.
- DeFi executes through supported contracts and networks, with additional interface, oracle and token dependencies.
- Native BTC, wrapped tokens, fiat and stablecoin payouts are different assets and routes.
- Support availability and the power to change an outcome must be assessed separately.
Advantages of Centralized Finance (CeFi)
Let’s take a look at what the major benefits are of using a CeFi service, such as Ledn.
Reliability
A centralised provider can organise dedicated operations, risk management and incident response around an identifiable business. This can be useful when an account problem requires a person to investigate records or coordinate a payment. Whether it is reliable depends on actual staffing, controls, funding and performance—not merely the presence of a company name.
An experienced team can investigate and respond to some problems, but cannot eliminate every loss, market shock or funding failure. Examine the provider’s custody arrangements, access controls, disclosure and incident procedures. Ask which actions support staff can actually take before treating human assistance as a substitute for understanding the loan or withdrawal rules.
Regulations and Compliance
Companies must meet the rules applicable to their activities and locations. Identifiable entities and contracts can make responsibility and dispute routes clearer. Registration for one activity is not a universal licence, a guarantee of solvency or deposit insurance. DeFi interfaces, developers, issuers and users may also face legal obligations; decentralisation is not immunity from law.
Ease of Use
An account-based interface can reduce the steps a user must coordinate. The provider may handle identity verification, payout instructions and transaction records in one workflow, with staff able to investigate some problems. This is useful for someone familiar with bank or brokerage accounts. It does not mean staff can reverse every transaction or suspend contractual liquidation.
Customer Service
Direct support can help establish which documents are needed, explain an account record or coordinate a repayment. Compare availability, escalation procedures and the actual powers of the team. DeFi interfaces can also offer support, but assistance with an interface is not equivalent to a lender assuming responsibility for the underlying position.
Liquidity
A CeFi provider may obtain funding from institutional partners or arrange bank payouts, which can help a borrower seeking off-chain liquidity. Its ability to deliver depends on those facilities, account eligibility and operational capacity. There is no general rule that every centralised service has deeper or more reliable liquidity than every DeFi market.
Security
Assess the complete control path: who authorises a withdrawal, how addresses are verified, which employees can alter settings and how recovery works if a device or key is compromised. A visible blockchain balance cannot establish all of those controls. DeFi also depends on interface hosting, development processes and sometimes off-chain oracle infrastructure. An audit of one contract does not automatically cover a website, bridge, collateral issuer or later upgrade. A managed provider can coordinate account operations; a public protocol can make certain parameters and transactions inspectable. Compare those concrete capabilities rather than equating either model with universal safety.
Security controls can include key segregation, multisignature arrangements, hardware protection, access controls, monitoring and independent reviews. Some firms also carry insurance, but coverage, exclusions and beneficiaries must be checked. Neither a broad security claim nor an insurance reference proves that a customer’s particular loss would be covered.
Greater range of assets
A provider can connect native BTC and fiat payment rails without requiring every asset to live on one smart-contract chain. DeFi markets accept specified tokens on supported networks; BTC exposure often involves a representation such as wrapped BTC rather than native coins. Tokenised assets can represent off-chain value, but that adds issuer and redemption dependencies. Check the exact collateral and payout rather than assume every token bearing a Bitcoin name is interchangeable.
Disadvantages of Centralized Finance (CeFi)
Of course, despite there being many positives to using CeFi, there are some negatives that you should know about.
Custody Risk
A strong track record and risk controls are useful evidence, but custody and counterparty risk do not become a non-issue. A company may restrict access, fail or enter insolvency proceedings. Asset segregation, permitted use, legal claims and recovery timing matter. BlockFi’s failure and recovery process illustrate why the actual claim category matters, not merely the account balance shown before withdrawals stopped.
Geographical Restrictions
As CeFi companies need to follow regulatory measures and be compliant with the laws of the countries they work with– this means that very few (if any) of them can offer their services to the entire world. To operate in any country, a CeFi company must ensure they are strictly keeping in line with the laws of the nations they function within.
DeFi access can be less dependent on opening an account with one provider, but users and interfaces remain subject to applicable law. Websites may restrict regions or wallets, collateral issuers may impose controls and particular services may require verification. Public contracts existing on a network does not establish that every person may lawfully use every interface or product.
Cyberattacks
Both models can suffer cyberattacks. A centralised account can be compromised through credentials, staff access or custody systems; a DeFi position can be exposed through contract flaws, malicious approvals or compromised interfaces. Test the response plan appropriate to the threat rather than assume a category is inherently better at every form of defence.
High Fees and Low-Interest Rates
Compare all-in costs at the same amount and duration. A company may charge for funding, operations and service, while a protocol’s rates can respond to utilisation. Origination charges, spreads, network fees and withdrawal costs can change the result. Higher cost does not itself prove better risk management, and a low displayed rate does not include every risk or expense.
Advantages of Decentralized Finance (DeFi)
We’ve covered CeFi’s pros and cons, so let’s now take a look at how DeFi compares.
Autonomy
Direct wallet interaction can reduce dependence on a single account operator. You can inspect transactions and, where supported, interact with a contract through more than one verified interface. Once assets are deposited, however, the contract’s rules control their use and withdrawal. Holding the wallet key does not mean you can remove collateral while leaving an undercollateralised loan outstanding.

Censorship Resistance
A distributed network and publicly accessible contracts can reduce reliance on one operator, making censorship or shutdown more difficult at some layers. That does not make a product impervious to government action or technical interruption. Interfaces, domains, validators, administrators and token issuers can each create points of control. Assess the layer you actually use.
Accessibility
Some protocols allow wallet-based access without conventional account onboarding. This can lower certain barriers, but it is not a universal no-KYC or worldwide-eligibility promise. Requirements depend on the interface, assets and applicable rules. A user still needs supported tokens, transaction fees, a secure wallet and enough understanding to avoid incorrect approvals or network transfers.
Disadvantages of Decentralized Finance (DeFi)
High Volatility
Volatility depends on the specific collateral and debt assets, not solely on whether a platform is decentralised. Markets do not automatically accept every token on their network. Risk parameters, liquidity and eligibility determine what can be supplied or borrowed. Smaller or less liquid assets can be harder to sell during stress, while stablecoins also have peg and issuer risks.
Hacks and Risks of Smart Contract Failures
The 2023 Curve-related incident showed how a software dependency can affect several projects at once. Vulnerable Vyper compiler versions 0.2.15, 0.2.16 and 0.3.0 produced malfunctioning reentrancy locks in affected contracts. CertiK’s incident analysis, dated 31 July 2023 and subsequently updated, records approximately $69.3 million taken across six affected projects and $16.7 million returned, leaving about $52 million at that reporting snapshot. Those are distinct measures, not a claim about the final unrecovered amount. Assess the deployed compiler version and affected code path; a historical incident does not mean every current Curve deployment has the same flaw.
Scalability Issues
A DeFi service is only as scalable as the blockchain it runs on. If that blockchain gets congested or inundated with transactions, then it can cause the network to get sluggish. Not only can this make for slow transactions, but it can even increase fees for users. For instance, if you use an Ethereum-based service, then periods of high activity can mean your gas fees can rise, just so that you can have your transactions added to the blockchain. This was a major issue during the 2020-2021 bull market, where on-chain transactions soared, leaving many users paying hefty fees.
Privacy Concerns
DeFi services have a strange relationship with privacy. On one hand, you could say that your actions are more anonymous in the sense that you do not need to hand over identifying documentation (or even provide a real name). On the other hand, everything that happens is on-chain, meaning there is a public ledger that documents your activity in explicit detail. However, despite the fact that you do not give over such sensitive documents, this does not mean it is impossible for somebody to track your actions.
Public transaction histories can create privacy concerns for individuals and businesses. If an address becomes linked to an identity, observers may infer balances, counterparties or trading activity. A pseudonymous address is not a promise of anonymity. An account-based provider may keep transaction records private from the public while collecting identity information and responding to applicable legal requirements. These are different privacy trade-offs.
Limited Customer Service
DeFi teams and interfaces can provide documentation, communities and support. Their ability to alter a completed transaction or recover funds is a different question. Verify the support channel and its powers before relying on it. No legitimate support process should require your seed phrase. A person answering a message does not imply a legal obligation to reimburse a protocol loss.
Can CeFi and DeFi Work Together?
A familiar account interface can connect to a decentralised protocol underneath. Coinbase's loan introduction, for example, describes an interface to Morpho on Base. The account experience and the underlying lending mechanism are separate layers.
That matters because a user may need to assess both. Eligibility and interface charges can come from the service, while collateral and liquidation depend on the selected protocol arrangement. Calling the whole experience “CeFi” or “DeFi” can hide the dependencies that influence the decision.
Draw the path from your asset to its destination: account or wallet, collateral token, protocol or lender, and payout. Then ask which party or contract can move funds at each stage. This gives the labels practical meaning without assuming one is superior.
A hybrid arrangement is sometimes called CeDeFi. It can combine an account interface and support with on-chain execution, but it also combines dependencies. Coinbase’s eligibility and interface terms are not identical to Morpho’s market parameters. Ask which layer determines fees, collateral rights, liquidation and recovery, and do not infer that combining models automatically creates the best of both.
What to choose for Crypto Lending - CeFi or DeFi?
Begin with your actual use case. If you need bank liquidity against native BTC and want an identifiable lender and support team, compare an account-based loan such as Ledn’s. If you want to operate on-chain and understand the collateral token, contract and repayment asset, a suitable DeFi market may fit. Neither choice should be based on a prediction that one category is inherently more future-proof.
Compare collateral format, debt asset, all-in cost, term, liquidation, custody and eligibility. Ledn’s BTC collateral is subject to restricted permitted posting and is not lent to generate interest; a borrower still needs to assess lender and custody risk. A DeFi position needs token, oracle, code and execution analysis. See DeFi versus CeFi loans for the narrower borrowing decision.
Keep borrowing separate from supplying assets for yield. The first creates debt secured by collateral; the second exposes capital to the strategy generating the return. A provider’s reputation for one activity does not answer the risks of the other. Likewise, trading creates execution and settlement questions distinct from a long-term loan.
For a concrete custody review, compare Bitcoin-loan custody models. Record who controls keys, permitted collateral use and what happens at repayment or default. These questions remain useful whether the provider calls its service CeFi, DeFi or a hybrid.
Follow control and obligations through the product
Use CeFi and DeFi as starting definitions, not shortcuts to a safety verdict. Identify what you want to do, who or what holds the assets, and how the position ends. For native-BTC borrowing, Ledn's product terms describe one specific account-based arrangement.
