BlockFi entered bankruptcy in November 2022 after a liquidity crisis linked to the wider crypto-market disruption and its FTX exposure. Later recovery announcements materially changed the story: an article that stops at the initial withdrawal pause no longer gives readers the full picture.

Evaluating another lending arrangement? Use our crypto lending risk checklist to compare legal rights, asset use and access rather than relying on a provider’s headline rate.

The key events

The key events
PeriodDevelopmentWhy it matters
November 2022BlockFi paused withdrawals and filed Chapter 11 casesCustomers’ ordinary access gave way to a legal recovery process
September 2023The Chapter 11 plan was approvedRecovery proceeded under the confirmed plan rather than normal account operations
July 2024The plan administrator announced a claims sale enabling full allowed-claim distributionsEarly estimates were no longer the complete recovery picture
2025Further identity-verification instructions addressed remaining distributionsClaim-specific requirements and deadlines still mattered

The official creditors’ committee site records the 28 November 2022 filings and the later plan approval. BlockFi’s filing announcement identified recovery of counterparty obligations, including FTX-related obligations, as part of the restructuring effort.

What changed in the recovery outlook?

In a 22 July 2024 announcement, the plan administrator said a transaction monetizing FTX claims enabled a final distribution of 100% on allowed customer and general unsecured creditor claims.

That announcement should not be rewritten as “every customer has already received every asset.” An announced distribution basis, an individual allowed claim and a completed payment are different facts. Account-specific requirements and legal treatment can affect a person’s outcome.

Why 100% of a claim is not necessarily the original crypto

The later distribution communication described the recovery basis as the allowed dollar amount of claims. Returning that dollar amount does not necessarily restore the same number of BTC or ETH originally held, or compensate for every market movement during the period without access.

For example, an allowed dollar claim and the later market value of a historical Bitcoin balance can differ. Do not compare a recovery percentage with a current crypto price without understanding the claim’s valuation basis. This is an explanation of the distinction, not a calculation of any individual entitlement.

What should former customers do now?

Use the official case materials and verified administrator communications relevant to your claim. The May 2025 deadline in historical messages is not a new deadline for 2026. This article cannot establish whether a particular person has an outstanding entitlement or can still take a procedural step.

Be cautious with unsolicited recovery messages, payment requests and wallet-connection links. Verify the destination independently before providing information. Seek qualified legal advice for a claim-specific issue rather than relying on a general blog article.

What the case teaches about lending risk

The practical lesson is to understand who owes you repayment, how assets may be used and what happens when withdrawals stop. A high rate and a familiar interface do not answer those questions. Diversification, reserve disclosures and collateral policies each address particular issues, not every failure scenario.

When considering Ledn’s current products, examine their own terms and collateral arrangements rather than assuming another company’s outcome proves Ledn risk-free. For yield products, separately review crypto savings account structures. Historical failures are a reason for specific due diligence, not a substitute for it.

This article is for general information, not financial, investment, tax or legal advice. Digital assets and yield products can lose value or principal and may involve delayed access. Borrowing involves interest, fees and the risk of collateral liquidation. Eligibility and terms vary by jurisdiction and may change; the applicable agreement governs.
