What Is USDC? Backing, Transfers, Interest & Risks

Ledn has over $10 billion in loan originations since 2018 and counting!
Updated 10 September 2026
USDC is a dollar-linked stablecoin issued by Circle. It is designed to maintain a value of $1 and can move across supported blockchain networks. Holding USDC is different from holding cash in a bank account, and placing it in a yield product introduces a further provider or protocol relationship.
If you are comparing interest options, review Ledn’s USDC Growth offering and check the current rate bands, eligibility and risk disclosures.
What supports USDC?
Circle publishes reserve and assurance information on its transparency page. Those materials explain the backing at the stated reporting date. Check the current disclosure rather than relying on an old reserve percentage copied into a blog.
The intended dollar peg is not a guarantee that every exchange trade occurs at $1. Issuance and redemption arrangements help connect the token to dollars, while market liquidity and confidence influence secondary-market pricing.
Can you redeem USDC for dollars?
Direct issuer redemption and selling USDC on a platform are different processes. Eligibility and account requirements can limit access to direct redemption. A platform sale depends on that platform’s supported currencies, banking routes, fees and liquidity.
Before sending a substantial amount, check how you will convert it back to the money you need. “Dollar-linked” does not establish that a local bank transfer is available instantly or without cost.
Check the network, not only the ticker
USDC is available across multiple networks, and bridged versions can involve additional arrangements. Confirm the exact supported asset and network in the receiving platform’s current instructions. Do not assume that any token displaying “USDC” is accepted wherever another version is supported.
Use the current destination address and verify any minimum or other deposit condition. A low-fee network is not useful if the destination cannot credit the transfer. Keep transaction records for reconciliation and any applicable reporting obligations.
Does USDC pay interest automatically?
No. Merely holding USDC does not mean you are enrolled in an interest product. Returns generally come from lending or another separate arrangement, with its own terms and loss exposure.
Ledn offers USDC Growth to eligible clients. Its public rate structure has balance bands; a higher marginal tier should not be applied to the entire account in a comparison. A Transaction balance is not interchangeable with a Growth balance. See our USDC interest rate guide for the questions to ask before funding an account.
Can USDC lose its peg?
Yes. USDC traded away from its intended dollar value during the March 2023 banking disruption. That episode illustrates why reserve composition, banking access and market liquidity matter even for a reserve-backed token. It does not establish that every future disruption would resolve in the same way. Read the USDC depeg explanation for the historical sequence and practical lessons.
Choosing between USDC and another stablecoin
Compare issuer disclosures, the network you need, platform support, redemption access and total transfer costs. Do not infer that two dollar-linked tokens have identical legal terms or risk.
Our USDC versus USDT comparison addresses that token choice. If your next step is a lending account, separately review crypto lending risks: reserve backing does not guarantee that a third-party borrower or provider will repay you.
