DeFi vs CeFi Loans: Compare Costs, Custody and Risk

Ledn has over $11 billion in loan originations since 2018 and counting!
CeFi and DeFi borrowing differ in how a loan is operated: through a lending business and agreement, or through a specific on-chain market and its interface. Both can provide collateral-backed liquidity. Neither label alone establishes the cost, custody rights or liquidation process.

This guide breaks down how CeFi and DeFi loans work, and which model fits different types of borrowers.
Start with two borrower situations
A person already holding eligible assets on a supported network may want another token to use on-chain. A suitable DeFi market can be evaluated against that task: accepted collateral, borrowing availability, rate, liquidation parameters and transaction requirements.
A native-BTC holder paying a business expense through a bank account has a different route to assess. A direct lender such as Ledn may provide an available payout method without the borrower selecting an on-chain lending market. It still requires account verification, a loan agreement and collateral management.
Neither scenario establishes a universal winner. It explains why a protocol rate and a lender's quote are incomplete comparators until the starting asset and required destination match.
What is a CeFi loan?
A CeFi loan is a loan issued by a centralised provider. You deposit collateral, typically bitcoin or ether. The platform lends you cash or stablecoins against that collateral. The company manages the loan throughout its lifecycle.
The defining feature is the provider-managed contractual relationship—not a guarantee that risk has been removed.
The agreement sets the rate, term, collateral and default process. A company may supply notifications and support while also using fully automatic liquidation. Check the actual rate structure rather than assuming every CeFi offer is fixed.
Before accepting the agreement, establish:
- how much you can borrow
- what your rate is
- when liquidation risk increases
- how to respond if conditions change
You can identify a company and contractual counterparty. Legal recourse still depends on the entity, jurisdiction, agreement and financial circumstances; a company name is not a guarantee of recovery.

What is a DeFi loan?
A DeFi market records collateral and debt in smart contracts. Users may access it directly with a wallet or through a managed interface. The interface can add verification, fees and support, so the protocol and application should be assessed separately.
For example, Aave describes dynamic borrowing rates and health-factor monitoring. Morpho variable-rate markets specify a collateral asset, debt asset, oracle, interest-rate model and liquidation LTV. Fixed-rate structures also exist; the specific market controls the answer.
What defines a DeFi loan is programmatic execution. You are responsible for:
- monitoring your collateral
- managing your health factor
- understanding how the protocol behaves

CeFi vs DeFi loans: key differences
| Dimension | CeFi | DeFi |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Provider account and agreement | Wallet/contract, sometimes a managed interface |
| Rates | Fixed or variable by offer | Variable or fixed by specific market |
| Liquidation | Can be automatic; notification rules vary | Contract-defined conditions and execution |
| Access | Verification and product eligibility | Market/interface requirements apply |
| Fit | Direct support and available payout route | Compatible on-chain assets and operations |
An important difference between CeFi and DeFi loans is how risk is handled.
A CeFi provider may reduce the wallet and transaction work the borrower handles personally, and can supply a defined term and human contact. The borrower must still manage collateral and repayment; staff cannot be assumed to override automatic liquidation.
A DeFi market enforces published parameters through transactions on its blockchain. Rates may vary with utilisation, or a specific fixed-rate product may apply. Execution also depends on network conditions, market liquidity, token contracts and price data.
Compare the operating requirements and rights of the actual loan. Automation exists in both categories, and each retains dependencies that the borrower must understand.

Advantages of CeFi loans
A lender-managed loan can be useful when these features match the borrower's needs:
A defined offer: A stated rate and term can simplify budgeting. Read origination charges, renewal conditions and the amount due at maturity before comparing with another product.
Fewer direct protocol operations: A provider may handle the lending infrastructure without asking the borrower to select a market or sign smart-contract approvals. Secure account access and LTV monitoring remain necessary.
Monitoring tools: Alerts and funded top-up tools can support collateral management, but a warning is not a guaranteed response window and cannot prevent every liquidation.
Human support: A team may explain funding, repayment and account processes. Confirm its hours and authority; support is not a promise to reverse a sale.
Funding relationships: A direct lender may offer suitable loan sizes and bank payout routes. Large positions also exist on-chain; compare actual capacity and usable proceeds rather than assume CeFi always supports more.
Advantages of DeFi loans
DeFi loans prioritise access and control.
Direct access: Some markets allow wallet-based borrowing without a lender application. Interfaces, local restrictions and permissioned markets can impose additional conditions.
Programmatic execution: A confirmed transaction can establish a position without waiting for discretionary underwriting. It still needs eligible collateral, liquidity and working network infrastructure.
Visible market state: Published contracts and on-chain balances can reveal rules, rates and positions. They do not automatically prove the completeness of off-chain backing or eliminate vulnerabilities.
Wallet-based operation: You control wallet actions, but pledged collateral is restricted by the contract. You cannot freely withdraw it if that would violate the position's collateral requirements.
For experienced users, this flexibility means you can move quickly, switch positions, and interact directly with liquidity pools.
CeFi vs DeFI loan safety comparison
Use the following evidence to evaluate each model. 'Managed' does not mean risk-free, and 'on-chain' does not mean there are no counterparties.
| Dimension | CeFi | DeFi |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Read custody and permitted reuse | Inspect signing approvals, contract and token dependencies |
| Rates | Model fees and maturity cost | Model utilisation changes or fixed-term charges |
| Liquidation | Know thresholds and settlement time | Know oracle, threshold, penalty and execution |
| Access | Identify legal entity and account restrictions | Identify market and interface restrictions |
| Fit | Test support and repayment process | Test ability to transact during stressed conditions |
Differences in collateral and liquidation
Collateral management is another important difference.
For Ledn, notifications occur at 70% and 75% LTV. At 80%, liquidation is automatic and irreversible, with a 0.50% trade spread. Eligible funded Auto Top-Up may add Transaction Account BTC at 70% toward 68%. These are Ledn conditions, not rules shared by every CeFi lender.
In an on-chain market, reaching its liquidation condition makes the position subject to the protocol's liquidation process. The transaction mechanics, amount sold and penalty vary. An interface may provide alerts, but the presence of notifications does not change the underlying contract.
Consider a hypothetical $10,000 debt against $15,000 of collateral: LTV is about 66.7%. If collateral falls to $12,500 with debt unchanged, LTV is 80%. That is a mathematical illustration, not Ledn's typical 50% origination offer.
- For Ledn, the 80% level triggers automatic liquidation; action to reduce LTV must take effect before the process.
- For a DeFi position, use that market's actual threshold and oracle valuation; do not import the 80% figure from another product.
Price the funds you can actually use
If you need bank money, account for converting and withdrawing any borrowed tokens. Check whether the application adds fees to the protocol rate. If you need on-chain liquidity, confirm that the token and network match the intended transaction.
A variable rate can move after borrowing. A fixed-term quote has its own fees and maturity obligations. Use the rates guide to compare the same amount and period.
Ask what you would do during a difficult hour
For an on-chain position, identify how you would obtain the repayment asset, submit the necessary transaction and confirm it took effect. A functioning wallet alone does not establish that every dependency—such as the oracle, token or market liquidity—will behave as expected.
For a lender-managed loan, identify account access, contact routes, repayment instructions and settlement times. Support can explain a process, but should not be assumed able to reverse a completed liquidation or override the agreement.
The aim is to choose an operating model you can actually manage. If the plan relies on actions you cannot execute or on help that has not been promised, it needs work before the loan is opened.
Understand the collateral dependencies
Bitcoin-linked tokens can introduce custody, issuer, redemption and blockchain dependencies beyond the lending protocol. A native BTC loan avoids that particular token-conversion step but still relies on the lender and its custody arrangements.
Neither model removes trust. It distributes responsibility differently. Read DeFi loan risks and loan custody models.
Which model fits you?
If you want native BTC collateral and a bank-funded expense, a direct lender may reduce the number of conversion and protocol steps. You still need to accept its custody terms and manage the obligation.
If you are DeFi-native and comfortable managing wallets, smart contracts, and liquidation thresholds, DeFi may offer more flexibility.
If your priority is a defined term and human assistance, compare providers that actually deliver those features. A long-term holding strategy does not make a short-term loan automatically suitable.
If you are a short-term, tactical borrower moving between positions, both CeFi and DeFi can work depending on speed and cost.
Most common mistakes borrowers make
Common operational mistakes include:
- Borrowing too close to maximum loan-to-value is one of the biggest risks. It leaves no room for market movement.
- Ignoring variable rate changes in DeFi can lead to unexpectedly high borrowing costs.
- Using highly volatile collateral increases liquidation risk.
- Not understanding liquidation thresholds leads to avoidable losses.
- Interacting with unknown contracts or relying on an audit without checking its scope, implementation and remaining risks.
Where Ledn’s native-BTC model fits
Ledn uses native BTC collateral with a typical 50% initial LTV and supported bank or stablecoin payouts. Its standard term is 12 months, with no required monthly payments and no early repayment penalty. This can fit a borrower seeking usable funds without selecting an on-chain token market.
Its pricing table lists APRs of 10.99% below $250,000; 10.49% from $250,000; 9.99% from $500,000; 9.75% from $1 million; and 9.25% from $2 million. Quote, fees and eligibility still determine the actual offer.
The Open Book Reports and Proof of Reserves provide evidence to inspect alongside the agreement. Collateral may be re-posted within specified funding arrangements but cannot be lent out for interest. Read the custody model rather than interpreting custody as a no-reuse promise.
As with any lending provider, loan terms, availability, and features depend on jurisdiction and current product conditions.

Plan for Ledn’s maturity
From 1 January 2027, accrued interest and fees must be cleared at maturity or mid-term refinancing. Eligible principal can renew under the offered conditions, including LTV below 65%; available stablecoins and, if needed, BTC sales may settle charges and bring LTV to 64%. Continued borrowing is not guaranteed. Read the renewal rules.
Conclusion
Choose the route whose starting asset, payout, repayment and operating demands fit the job. For a bank payment, compare the full path to spendable money; for an on-chain use, compare the actual token and market. A headline rate without that context is incomplete.
Ledn combines native-BTC collateral and a direct lending agreement with account support and monitoring tools. Its published history reports $11B-plus funded since 2018 and zero client asset losses across eight years. That is provider-reported historical evidence, not protection from liquidation or a guarantee of future access. Review the current loan terms.
FAQs
Are CeFi loans safer than DeFi loans?
Neither is universally safer. A direct lender introduces contractual, custody and counterparty risks; a protocol introduces contract, oracle, token, liquidity and interface dependencies. Both can liquidate collateral.
Are DeFi loan rates lower than CeFi?
Not universally. Compare the same amount, term and usable proceeds, including interface, conversion and origination charges. Variable rates can change; fixed-rate products have their own early-repayment and maturity terms.
Can you get liquidated in both CeFi and DeFi?
Yes. Both can use automatic liquidation. Notifications, penalties and amounts sold depend on the specific loan or market.
Do CeFi loans require KYC?
Centralised lenders such as Ledn require verification. Some protocols allow direct wallet-based access, while interfaces and other markets impose eligibility or identity requirements.
