Crypto Passive Income: Compare Yield Sources & Risks

Ledn has over $11 billion in loan originations since 2018 and counting!
If you hold crypto and don’t plan to sell anytime soon, there are ways to put it to work. From earning interest to using structured notes, there is now a growing range of passive income options.
Explore Ledn’s stablecoin Growth Accounts if an eligible USDC or USDT lending balance matches your objective.
The approaches differ in effort and exposure. Some delegate administration to a provider; others need wallets, contracts, hardware or active monitoring. This guide distinguishes income from price appreciation and borrowing, and explains the current role of Ledn's stablecoin Growth Accounts.

Is passive crypto income taxable?
What is passive income?
It’s income that doesn’t depend on your daily involvement. In crypto, it typically means earning yield from interest, staking, or holding certain tokens.

Can you earn passive income with crypto?
Yes, crypto can generate interest, staking rewards, trading fees or promotional rewards. None is automatic merely because you own a token. Choose the asset you want to retain and identify the additional activity that pays the return before comparing percentages.

12 crypto income approaches and how they differ
1. Crypto lending platforms
Earn interest by lending out your crypto through trusted custodial platforms.
Ledn currently offers Growth interest for eligible USDC and USDT balances, not BTC or ETH. Its legal schedule lists 5% APY on the first 100,000 units and 6% on the excess. Funding supports Bitcoin-collateralized retail loans, with daily accrual and monthly payment in kind. Proof of Reserves is conducted every six months; it provides balance evidence, not a guarantee that principal cannot be lost.
How to get started: Complete verification, confirm eligibility and the supported network, then move eligible USDC or USDT from Transaction to Growth under the current account instructions.
Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆ – Beginner-friendly

2. Crypto savings accounts
Earn on an eligible account balance under a provider's terms.
An interest account delegates loan administration and interest calculation to a provider. At Ledn, USDC and USDT Growth funding is separate by asset type and product. Transaction Accounts do not earn Growth interest. BTC and ETH Growth Accounts were retired in 2025, so the old four-asset earning menu should not guide a new deposit.
Current Ledn Growth bands, reviewed 26 October 2026:
BTC Growth: retired; no current interest offer.
ETH Growth: retired; no current interest offer.
USDC / USDT Growth: 5% APY on the first 100,000 units of the relevant asset and 6% on the excess, variable and subject to eligibility.
How to get started: Open a Ledn account, deposit crypto into your Transaction Account, then transfer to a Growth Account.
Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆ – Very easy to set up and manage

3. Dual Cryptocurrency Notes (DCNs)
Earn high yields while expressing your short-term market view on Bitcoin.
A Ledn DCN combines a fixed term return with a possible asset conversion at a chosen strike price. The comparison is made at maturity, not merely when BTC touches the strike during the term. With USD-to-BTC, BTC below the strike at maturity means conversion into BTC at the strike; otherwise the original USD amount returns. With BTC-to-USD, BTC above the strike means conversion to USD at the strike; otherwise the original BTC returns. The term return is paid in the original asset. USD amounts generally fund and settle through USDC, subject to the agreement.
How to get started: After depositing crypto with Ledn, use the DCN interface to select a strike price, tenor, and settlement preference.
Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆ – Requires a basic understanding of price targets and outcomes
DCN example: why the coupon is not the whole outcome
For an illustrative USD-to-BTC note with a $55,000 strike, a $50,000 BTC maturity price would convert the principal into BTC at $55,000—not the lower market price. If BTC finishes at or above $55,000, the original USD principal returns. The fixed term return is separate from that conversion. For BTC-to-USD, conversion above the strike means selling at the strike even if the market has risen further.
A DCN cannot be cancelled once placed. The documented minimum is 0.10 BTC or its USD equivalent, and jurisdictional restrictions apply. Annualized yield is not the amount earned over a short note: compare the actual term return and both settlement outcomes before committing.
4. Long-term holding
Hold BTC or ETH through market cycles and let long-term value play out.
Holding preserves your chosen asset exposure without adding a lending arrangement, but it produces no income by itself. Self-custody gives control of keys and responsibility for backups. A Bitcoin-backed loan can provide liquidity without an immediate sale, but creates debt, interest and collateral-liquidation risk; it is not a return on the collateral or a universal tax exemption.
How to get started: Buy BTC or ETH, store it in a secure wallet (preferably hardware), and avoid unnecessary trades.
Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆ – Simple, but requires patience and discipline
5. Decentralised lending
Supply a specific on-chain lending market through your wallet.
Aave supplies tokens into lending pools; Compound III pays interest on the selected market's base asset. You control wallet keys, but supplied tokens are committed to contracts and withdrawals depend on available liquidity and position rules. This may fit users able to assess contract versions, collateral parameters, oracles and network costs. It is not equivalent to keeping unrestricted tokens in a wallet.
How to get started: Connect a wallet like MetaMask to a DeFi protocol, supply assets, and monitor returns.
Difficulty: ★★★☆☆ – Requires comfort with DeFi tools and wallets
6. Staking
Support blockchain networks and earn rewards by locking up your tokens.
Staking supports proof-of-stake validation using the network's staking asset. Ethereum's public dashboard currently shows an indicative 2.5% APR, not a fixed offer. Solo validation needs 32 ETH plus hardware and operational work; pooled or exchange routes lower the entry amount but add service and contract dependencies. Validator penalties, slashing, fees and withdrawal queues can affect returns. USDT and BTC do not earn native Ethereum staking rewards.
How to get started: Choose a platform (e.g. Coinbase, Lido, Rocket Pool), follow their staking instructions, and monitor your rewards.
Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆ – Fairly easy via exchanges; more technical for solo staking
7. Crypto mining
Earn BTC by validating transactions, either on your own or via a hosted service.
Mining earns BTC through proof-of-work competition and is an operating activity, not a deposit yield. With a host such as Compass, customers can own ASIC machines while the provider supplies power and maintenance. Its published hosting model charges monthly fiat operating fees; the contract cannot simply be cancelled without remaining obligations. Assess hardware price, power draw, downtime, network difficulty and BTC price before treating gross mining revenue as profit.
How to get started: Buy ASIC hardware or rent a hosted mining plan. Track profitability using tools like WhatToMine.
Difficulty: ★★★★☆ – High upfront cost and technical setup required
8. Dividend-paying tokens
Hold tokens that distribute revenue or fees as passive income.
A revenue-linked token needs a specific distribution mechanism. GMX documentation currently says 27% of protocol fees fund buybacks, but distribution of bought-back GMX to stakers is suspended until GMX reaches $90 under the current documentation; it is not current spendable cash flow. Lido's LDO is a governance token, not the same as the stETH position that reflects staking. Beefy's BIFI Pool/Vault is a documented revenue-incentive route requiring participation, not merely wallet ownership. Token-price losses can outweigh distributions.
How to get started: Buy dividend-paying tokens and either hold them or stake them in the relevant contract.
Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆ – Easy to participate, but requires research into sustainability
9. Yield farming
Actively manage your assets to chase the highest APYs across DeFi.
Yield farming combines protocol positions and incentives. Yearn's vaults can use one or multiple strategies, while Beefy vaults automate reinvesting strategy rewards. Providing liquidity to a DEX such as Uniswap or Curve is a different underlying activity from depositing into a lending market. A vault adds another contract and fee layer; compare net returns and dependencies rather than assuming automation removes risk.
How to get started: Use platforms like Yearn, Beefy, or directly provide liquidity to Uniswap, Curve, etc. Keep an eye on pool APYs and token prices.
Difficulty: ★★★★★ – Best for experienced DeFi users

10. Cashback crypto cards
Earn crypto rewards on everyday spending.
Card rewards are linked to spending, not yield on idle savings. Coinbase's current prepaid debit card offers rotating crypto rewards to eligible US users; spending crypto involves conversion to dollars. Crypto.com uses region-specific card tiers, with subscription or CRO requirements for certain rewards. BitPay currently says new card applications are paused, so its historical cashback offer is not an immediately available alternative. Compare eligible spend, fees, reward caps and conversion consequences.
How to get started: Apply for a crypto card, link it to your wallet or exchange account, and start spending. Rewards are automatically credited in crypto.
Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆ – As easy as using a normal debit card
11. Referral programmes
Get paid in crypto by referring others to platforms you already use.
Referral programmes pay for a qualifying introduction or activity rather than lending your assets. The conditions may require a funded loan, trade or other milestone; do not assume a sign-up or deposit alone earns a bonus. A referral discount for a borrower is also different from cash paid to the referrer. Use the programme's displayed terms and disclose the incentive when sharing a link.
How to get started: Log in to your preferred platform (e.g. Ledn, Binance, Nexo), copy your referral link, and share it with friends or online communities.
Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆ – Zero technical skills required
12. Interest-bearing stablecoin wallets
Evaluate a separate earning feature for a dollar-linked balance.
A wallet can hold a stablecoin without producing income. An earning feature offered through Coinbase, Kraken or another service is a separate product whose mechanism matters: rewards, lending and protocol supply are not interchangeable. At Ledn, an eligible USDC/USDT balance must be in Growth rather than Transaction to earn the applicable rate. Dollar-linked tokens can reduce BTC price exposure, but retain peg, issuer and platform risks.
How to get started: Buy USDC or USDT, deposit it into an interest-bearing wallet or account, and start earning.
Operational effort: account-based setup; the risk depends on the actual earning product.
Is passive crypto income taxable?
Tax treatment depends on residence, activity and the product contract. For a US example, the IRS treats digital assets as property and identifies mining and staking receipts as reportable activity. A later sale or exchange can create a separate gain or loss.
- Lending interest: record the payment date, asset amount and value; ask how the account return is classified locally.
- Staking and farming: distinguish rewards received from changes in value of tokens already held.
- Revenue-linked tokens: the marketing word dividend does not establish the tax classification.
- DCNs and cards: a conversion, coupon and spending reward can involve different tax questions; retain the actual agreement and settlement record.
- Disposals: preserve cost basis so a later sale is not confused with the original income receipt.
Keep records of quantities, timestamps, valuations, fees and transfers. IRS digital-asset guidance explains the US reporting framework; obtain advice for your own circumstances rather than applying it globally.
Know the risks
Every passive income strategy in crypto comes with trade-offs. Here’s what to consider before committing your assets:
Platform risk
When using custodial platforms or exchanges, you're trusting a third party to safeguard your funds. If the company faces insolvency, mismanages funds, or is hacked, your assets could be at risk. Choose platforms with strong security records, transparent reporting, and third-party reserve attestations.
Insurance gaps
Unlike traditional banks, most crypto platforms don’t offer deposit insurance. Even if a provider claims to use robust security or collateralisation, there's no guarantee of recovery in extreme scenarios. Some services offer limited coverage through third-party insurers, but it rarely covers all user assets.
Rate changes
Yields in crypto are market-driven. That means APYs can change rapidly based on borrower demand, token supply, and macro trends. What’s 11% today could drop to 4% next quarter, especially for stablecoin products or during market slowdowns.
Regulatory changes
Rules can change access, disclosures and permitted products. Use the eligibility rules for your residence and the product itself; do not route around restrictions through a different jurisdiction. Ledn Growth and DCNs are unavailable in the EU and Switzerland under its published regional notice. Brazil's October 30, 2026 changes stop new Growth funding and new DCN activity while preserving existing positions under the notice.
Market volatility
Even if you're earning yield, the underlying asset could fall in value. For example, earning 10% on BTC isn’t helpful if BTC drops 40% over the same period. Always weigh your income potential against price exposure, especially with altcoins or high-volatility DeFi assets.
Getting started with Ledn
Ledn provides an administered stablecoin lending route for eligible holders. Its relevance is the disclosed Bitcoin-backed retail funding model, asset-type separation and reporting, not a promise of capital preservation or better protection than every alternative.
What makes Ledn different?
Ledn conducts Proof of Reserves every six months, with client balance inclusion, and publishes separate Open Book loan metrics. Growth funding supports Bitcoin-backed retail loans; it is not exclusively institutional lending and is not a blanket promise that every asset is never put to use. Growth assets are ring-fenced by product and asset type, while credit and liquidity exposure remain tied to their lending activity.
How to get started:
- Create a free Ledn account.
- Complete KYC (identity verification is required to comply with financial regulations)
- Deposit a currently supported asset on the correct network into your Transaction Account
- Choose how to earn:
- Transfer to a Growth Account to earn variable interest, accrued daily and paid monthly
- Consider a Dual Cryptocurrency Note only if eligible and comfortable with its fixed term, conversion outcomes and risks.
- Track your earnings in real time via your account dashboard
- View platform-wide activity through Ledn’s separately defined Open Book Reports
Growth's product and asset-type separation is different from government insurance. Bitcoin collateral buffers loan exposure at origination, but its value can fall and liquidation execution matters. Borrower collateral custody and the stablecoins lent to borrowers have different contractual roles.
Compare the source of income
| Mechanism | What may generate the return | What you still need to monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Centralized crypto lending | Provider lending activity | Counterparty exposure, terms, rate changes and withdrawals |
| Protocol lending | Borrower demand | Contracts, market liquidity, collateral design and network costs |
| Proof-of-stake participation | Network rewards | Validator or service performance, penalties and access conditions |
| Liquidity provision | Trading fees and incentives | Pool composition, price divergence and incentive changes |
These mechanisms do not have a common risk level simply because their websites show APYs. Some returns are paid in volatile tokens, while others involve stablecoins whose dollar peg can still come under pressure.
What “passive” leaves out
You may need to manage wallet security, transfer networks, changing terms and tax records. Protocol strategies can require transaction fees to enter, adjust and exit. A provider account can reduce some operational steps while adding dependence on the provider’s performance.
If a strategy requires frequent movement to maintain the advertised return, include that work and cost in the comparison. A rate quoted before expenses is not the same as spendable income after fees and applicable taxes.
Avoid confusing appreciation with income
An asset rising in price is not the same as a contractual interest payment. Similarly, a reward paid in a token may increase your token balance while its dollar value declines. Plan around the currency in which you need to meet expenses rather than assuming the token’s price remains unchanged.
Borrowing against Bitcoin is not passive income either. It creates cash proceeds and a debt. If borrowed funds are used to buy more BTC, the resulting position has greater price exposure and a repayment obligation, not a guaranteed yield.
Build a realistic comparison
Start with the asset you intend to hold and the time you can commit it. Identify the yield source, calculate total costs and consider a downside scenario: a depeg, provider failure, contract problem or delayed withdrawal. Avoid using capital needed for essential expenses in an arrangement whose losses you cannot absorb.
For the next step, compare crypto interest mechanisms, stablecoin rates and yield farming risks. If the objective is liquidity instead, review Bitcoin-backed loans separately from income strategies.

Final thoughts
The twelve approaches above span different activities: lending, network rewards, operating revenue, spending incentives and asset appreciation. Some are not passive income at all, which is why distinguishing them helps you choose.
Whether you're a long-term holder looking for steady returns or a hands-on investor exploring DeFi strategies, the key is to match your approach to your risk tolerance and time commitment.
For an eligible stablecoin holder, Ledn provides a defined account workflow and loan-funded return. For someone who wants to retain BTC exposure, borrowing and holding should be evaluated separately from earning. The appropriate next step follows the asset and objective, not the highest advertised percentage.
