A Bitcoin-backed loan gives you spendable funds without selling the BTC pledged at the outset. You keep exposure to its price, but take on interest, repayment and liquidation obligations. That trade-off can fit a defined liquidity need; it is not a risk-free answer to fear of missing a future rally.

Let’s take a look at how exactly Bitcoin-backed loans work, and whether they suit your needs.

What is a Bitcoin Loan?

A Bitcoin-backed loan is a loan where you receive an asset (usually fiat) in exchange for placing your BTC in collateral. A Bitcoin loan could also refer to a loan somebody takes out in order to buy more bitcoin, also using your BTC as collateral (such as Ledn’s B2X loan product).

How Do The Different Types of Bitcoin Loans Work?

There are various types of Bitcoin-backed loans on the market, all with their own distinct quirks and differences.

Collateralized Bitcoin Loans

A collateralised loan is secured by pledged assets. With an overcollateralised loan, collateral value initially exceeds the amount borrowed: at 50% LTV, $40,000 of BTC supports $20,000 of principal. Undercollateralised credit is a different arrangement that relies more heavily on borrower underwriting; it should not be assumed available from a retail Bitcoin lender.

Uncollateralized Bitcoin Loans

An unsecured loan does not rely on a specific pledged asset and generally requires an assessment of repayment capacity or creditworthiness. It could be denominated in money or a digital asset; the debt currency is separate from whether collateral is required. Ledn's Bitcoin-backed product is secured, not an unsecured loan.

DeFi (Decentralized Finance) Bitcoin Loans

On-chain lending may accept a token representing Bitcoin rather than native BTC. WBTC and cbBTC are examples of distinct tokens with their own backing, custody and redemption arrangements. A familiar interface can hide that extra dependency. Assess the specific market, token, oracle and interface—not only the protocol name. See DeFi versus CeFi loans.

Separate your Bitcoin position from your spendable money

If a hypothetical borrower posts $40,000 of BTC for a $20,000 loan at 50% LTV, the borrower has not created $20,000 of new net wealth. They have obtained spendable proceeds and taken on a corresponding obligation, plus borrowing costs.

The BTC can still rise or fall in value, but it is restricted collateral. Counting the pledged holding as immediately available cash for another expense would overstate the resources available to the borrower.

This distinction matters when comparing a loan with a sale. A sale reduces BTC exposure and can have tax consequences, but it does not leave the same loan to repay. A loan preserves exposure initially while adding cost and monitoring. Evaluate the pros and cons against the actual purchase.

Choose the amount from the cash need and a stress test

If a hypothetical $20,000 loan is backed by $40,000 of BTC, initial LTV is 50%. If that collateral falls to $25,000 while debt stays unchanged, LTV reaches 80%—Ledn’s automatic liquidation threshold. Interest can make the threshold arrive sooner. A larger starting balance is not a reason to borrow more than the expense requires.

Identify the repayment source, a reserve for a price decline and a fallback if expected cash arrives late. Compare loan platforms on actual funding and repayment terms, and read the custody-model guide before committing BTC.

Advantages of Bitcoin Loans

Let’s take a look at the advantages of Bitcoin loans, to help explain why some people seek them out.

Collateral-based approval and available payout routes

Ledn uses eligible Bitcoin as collateral without a traditional credit check. Funding still requires account verification, approval, collateral receipt and settlement through the chosen route. A bank payment and an on-chain payout have different timing, so confirm usable funds before making a spending commitment.

This can be relevant to an eligible holder whose Bitcoin wealth is not reflected in salary or credit history. It does not remove identity, location or product-purpose requirements, and approval is separate from whether you can safely afford the debt.

Get Fiat Liquidity Without Selling Your BTC

A borrower can obtain funds while keeping the pledged BTC exposed to market movements. For example, a business owner expecting a receivable may prefer a temporary loan to an immediate sale. The repayment plan must still work if the receivable is delayed or BTC falls; retaining the position is not the only factor in the decision.

As the Price of Your BTC Increases, Your LTV Decreases

If BTC rises while debt is unchanged, LTV falls; the loan balance does not automatically fall. Ledn’s redemption feature may release excess collateral when LTV is below 30%, to a 40% target, subject to loan-age, timing and amount limits. Repayment reduces debt; redemption releases BTC and raises LTV again.

Risks of Bitcoin Loans

Like all forms of financial activity, Bitcoin loans come with some inherent risks. These are three of the biggest issues that can arise.

Risk of Platform Insolvency

A lender can suffer financial or operational distress, affecting access to collateral. Read the agreement, permitted reuse and insolvency arrangements rather than relying only on reputation. Ledn’s Custodied Loan model restricts re-posting to specified USD funding partners or managed financing vehicles, with verifiable custody and ring-fencing or bankruptcy-remote structures. Collateral cannot be lent out to generate interest. These protections answer specific custody questions, not every future risk.

Inability to Pay Your Loan

Ledn’s standard term is 12 months with no required monthly payments and no early repayment penalty. Interest accrues daily. From 1 January 2027, accrued interest and fees must be cleared at maturity or mid-term refinancing. Eligible principal may renew only under the offered conditions, including LTV below 65%. Available stablecoins and, if needed, BTC sales can settle accrued charges and bring LTV to 64% for renewal. Plan for repayment rather than assuming an indefinite, cost-free rollover.

Market Crashes

Price volatility becomes a different risk when BTC secures debt: a lender can sell collateral under the agreement. Ledn sends notifications at 70% and 75% LTV and automatically liquidates at 80%, applying a 0.50% trade spread and returning any remainder after the balance and charges are covered. Holding unpledged BTC can lose market value too, but does not create this loan-driven forced-sale trigger.

Eligibility Requirements for Bitcoin Loans

Different lending providers will have different rules for eligibility. Some may perform credit checks, require a certain amount of collateral, ask personal information, or seek knowledge about your history of financial activity.

Ledn’s public minimum is $500, with typical 50% initial LTV; that implies about $1,000 of BTC collateral at origination before other considerations. Higher minimums or commercial-purpose conditions may apply by jurisdiction. Complete verification and check the offer for the actual borrower; do not assume global availability or a guaranteed approval deadline.

Collateral-based access is useful only when the debt fits your resources. If losing pledged BTC would compromise essential expenses, a smaller purchase or partial asset sale may be a better fit even if a loan is available.

Bitcoin Loans vs Traditional Loans

Compare actual products, not just labels. A bank may assess income, credit history, property or business cash flow; a BTC-backed lender relies on eligible digital collateral plus required verification. Neither category is always easier, faster or cheaper.

Compare the collateral and repayment timing too. A long-term property mortgage, unsecured instalment loan and 12-month BTC-backed loan place different demands on cash flow and assets. Bitcoin's continuously traded price can change collateral coverage much faster than a property's valuation process.

Why Should You Use Ledn For a Bitcoin-backed Loan?

Ledn combines native BTC collateral, a defined USD-denominated loan and human support. Typical starting LTV is 50%, the standard term is 12 months, and early repayment has no penalty. Monthly Open Book Reports and periodic Proof of Reserves give borrowers evidence to inspect alongside the agreement.

The principal is denominated in dollars, so an increase in BTC's price does not itself increase the number of dollars borrowed. Interest and applicable fees still accrue. That distinction lets a borrower retain price exposure without owing the same quantity of BTC as a BTC-denominated debt. The reverse matters too: a price fall can raise LTV even when dollar principal is unchanged.

Conclusion

A Bitcoin-backed loan can fund a specific cash need while retaining market exposure, but the decision extends from initial funding through collateral management and closure.
