Stablecoin Lending: How Yield Works & What Can Go Wrong

Ledn has over $11 billion in loan originations since 2018 and counting!
Your stablecoins can earn interest while you hold them.
In Brazil, new Growth deposits and redeposits stop from October 30, 2026; existing balances continue earning. Availability elsewhere remains product- and jurisdiction-specific.
Explore Ledn’s USDC and USDT Growth Accounts for a custodial route with a disclosed lending model.
That gives you a way to grow digital dollars like USDT and USDC while keeping your portfolio in dollar terms. For many people, that makes stablecoin lending one of the simplest ways to put crypto to work.
This guide explains how stablecoin lending works, the main risks, and what to check before you use a lending product.
What is stablecoin lending?
Stablecoin lending means you deposit stablecoins such as USDT or USDC into a lending product.
Stablecoins are digital assets that try to stay worth about one US dollar.
When you lend them:
- Borrowers can use your funds for short term liquidity
- They pay interest
- You may earn part of that interest
The interest rate can change. It is not guaranteed.
How does stablecoin lending work?
At its core, stablecoin lending connects depositors and borrowers. Here’s how it works with a platform like Ledn:
- Deposit a supported stablecoin using the account’s current network instructions, then move an eligible balance into Growth; a Transaction balance does not itself earn interest.
- The platform lends these assets to borrowers who post collateral, such as Bitcoin, that exceeds the loan value.
- Borrowers pay interest on their loans, and a portion of that interest is shared with you as yield.
- You can request a transfer out under the account terms; processing, checks and withdrawal fees apply.
With Ledn, interest builds daily and is paid monthly.

In a custodial product, your relationship is governed by the provider’s agreement. It determines how assets can be used, how interest is calculated and when withdrawals can be requested. A decentralised lending protocol instead uses smart contracts and market-specific parameters, while still relying on software, liquidity and other infrastructure.
Depositor assets and pledged BTC collateral have different contractual roles. Collateral reduces some risks; it does not guarantee repayment.
Ledn’s public Growth disclosures describe stablecoin funding as primarily supporting BTC-backed retail loans. Borrowers provide collateral and pay borrowing costs. That activity supports the depositor return, subject to the account’s terms and performance of the arrangements.
Do not confuse the stablecoins funding loans with borrowers’ BTC collateral. They have different functions and contractual treatment. Neither a shared platform name nor the word custody means every account has identical risk.
CeFi account or DeFi supply position?
| Question | Custodial account | DeFi supply position |
|---|---|---|
| How do you participate? | Provider account and eligibility process | Compatible wallet and supported market |
| Who administers the arrangement? | Provider under legal terms | Protocol contracts and governance mechanisms |
| What moves the rate? | Provider pricing and underlying economics | Market parameters, utilisation and incentives |
| What can delay an exit? | Terms, checks or liquidity constraints | Available liquidity, network conditions or protocol restrictions |
Neither model eliminates counterparty or technical dependencies. Compare the specific product rather than assuming that decentralised always means safer or that a centralised provider works like a bank.
What’s the difference between crypto savings accounts vs DeFi protocols?
You can lend stablecoins in two main ways: through centralized finance (CeFi) platforms like Ledn or decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols such as Aave and Compound.
CeFi platforms administer lending under a customer agreement. Reporting, custody and rights vary. Ledn's Growth capital supports its Bitcoin-collateralized retail loan book rather than asking depositors to select individual borrowers.
DeFi protocols administer positions through smart contracts. A user controls their wallet but supplied tokens are committed to contracts and available liquidity. This differs from holding unencumbered tokens.
Aave rates depend on utilization and parameters. Compound III pays interest on the market's base asset, not automatically on collateral. Ledn's current legal schedule lists 5% APY on the first 100,000 USDC/USDT and 6% on the excess. These distinct structures cannot be ranked by a universal CeFi-versus-DeFi risk score.
CeFi vs DeFi lending: yield, risk, and control
| Model | Return | Reporting | Control | Risks | Fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ledn Growth | 5% first 100,000;6% excess USDC/USDT APY | PoR and defined loan metrics | Custodial account | Credit, custody, peg, liquidity | Account-based retail loan funding |
| Aave/Compound | Market-specific variable rates | On-chain data and code | Wallet transactions into contracts | Contracts, collateral, oracles, liquidity | Managing a specific on-chain position |
Is stablecoin lending safe?
Stablecoin lending can be a reliable way to earn yield, but it comes with some risks. The level of safety depends on where you lend and how well that platform manages funds. Here’s what you need to know.
1. Platform risk
A custodial provider administers assets under its terms. Ledn describes Growth as ring-fenced by product and asset type. This addresses separation from other activities, not deposit insurance or guaranteed access through every credit, operational or legal disruption.
2. Smart contract risk
Code, oracle and market-design failures can affect a position even if the wallet keys remain with the user. Review the audit scope and parameters for the actual deployment. An audit is not a guarantee about every future change.
3. Regulatory risk
Issuance, lending and marketing rules may affect different entities and activities. A token's regulatory status does not establish that an interest product is available to every holder. Eligibility depends on the service and jurisdiction.
4. Market and depegging risk
While stablecoins are designed to hold value, some have lost their peg in the past. USDC briefly fell to 88 cents in 2023 after a major bank exposure event, and TerraUSD collapsed entirely in 2022. Check what assets back your stablecoin and how reserves are verified.

What are the pros and cons of stablecoin lending?
Pros
Earn while holding: Generate passive income on digital dollars without needing to trade.
Less volatility: Stablecoins aim to maintain a reference value, which can reduce ordinary price swings relative to volatile crypto assets, but the peg is not guaranteed.
A measurable return: lending may pay interest on idle tokens. Compare the applicable rate after costs and credit exposure, not unsupported industry averages or an insured bank deposit.
Cons
Counterparty exposure: CeFi lending depends on the platform’s integrity and legal protections.
Depegging risk: Even stablecoins can temporarily lose their peg if market stress hits reserves.
Regulatory changes: New rules may alter how yield products are structured or taxed.
Tips for safe stablecoin lending
If you’re going to start lending, here are some best practices:
- Choose stablecoins with transparent reserve reports.
- Confirm that the lending platform undergoes independent audits.
- Diversify across assets and platforms where possible.
- Avoid platforms advertising unusually high variable APYs.
- Keep up to date with new legislation and compliance developments.
The future of stablecoin lending
Stablecoin lending is becoming more structured as regulation and reporting improve.
In the future you may see:
- clearer product terms
- more reserve reporting
- tighter rules on how yield products operate
For you as an investor, the most important step is still understanding how the yield is generated and what risks you are taking.

Earn up to 6% APY on USDT with Ledn
The Ledn Rates and Fees Schedule, checked 26 October 2026, lists 5% APY on the first 100,000 USDT and 6% on the excess. The same bands apply to USDC. Interest accrues daily and is paid monthly in kind. Rates vary and restrictions apply.
Our USDT Growth Accounts fund our overcollateralized bitcoin-backed retail loan book. APYs are variable, not guaranteed, and may change at any time based on your balance tier, eligibility, and jurisdiction.
How do ring-fencing and Proof of Reserves work?
Growth Accounts are ring-fenced. That means assets in your Growth Account are structured to be separate from the risks of our other products and services, and ring-fenced by asset type.
We also publish independent Proof-of-Reserves attestations by The Network Firm LLP. These attestations verify digital asset balances and liabilities at a point in time and let clients confirm inclusion through a Merkle-tree-based process. They’re conducted at least every six months.
Why interest rates change
Borrowing demand, available funding and product costs affect lending economics. Some advertised yields also include temporary incentives. A rate visible today may not apply for the full period you intend to hold the position.
Compare APR with APR or APY with APY, and distinguish whole-balance from marginal tiers. Consider network, swap and withdrawal costs. Use stablecoin rate comparisons to narrow the options rather than relying on a supposed market-wide average.
What overcollateralisation does not solve
Borrower collateral is intended to provide a buffer against default and price movement. It does not guarantee that collateral can always be sold quickly enough, that a platform will remain liquid or that an operational failure cannot occur.
A stablecoin depeg creates another issue. Recovering the same number of tokens is not the same as preserving their dollar purchasing value if the token’s price falls. Evaluate the issuer as well as the lender.
Ring-fencing and reserve attestations can help you understand structure and reporting. Their legal effect and scope are specific; they are not blanket promises of unaffected access during insolvency. Read crypto-lending risks and Proof of Reserves.
Before you lend
- Confirm the asset, network and product are supported for your account.
- Identify the yield source and who bears losses if it underperforms.
- Check the current rate, tier boundaries and withdrawal conditions.
- Keep funds needed for near-term obligations outside exposures you cannot tolerate.
If your objective is to raise cash against Bitcoin, you are on the borrower side of this process. Start with Bitcoin-backed loans, not a stablecoin yield account. If your objective is lending, understand both the return and the conditions for getting capital back.
FAQs
1. What is stablecoin lending?
Stablecoin lending lets you earn interest by depositing stablecoins like USDT (Tether) into a lending platform. Borrowers use these funds for short-term liquidity and pay interest, which you receive as yield.
2. How does stablecoin lending work?
You supply capital to a provider or protocol for lending. Collateral rules differ. Ledn uses Growth funding for its overcollateralized Bitcoin-backed retail loans. The stablecoins lent and borrowers' pledged BTC have different contractual roles; they are not interchangeable assets.
3. Is stablecoin lending safe?
There is no blanket guarantee. Assess stablecoin backing, credit exposure, liquidation, legal structure and withdrawal access. Ring-fencing and reserve reports concern defined aspects; they do not eliminate every loss scenario.
4. What are the best platforms for stablecoin lending in 2026?
Ledn provides eligible clients a custodial account with a disclosed retail loan-book model. Aave and Compound are market-specific protocol alternatives. Compare current return, liquidity, control and reporting, not historical fixed-rate assumptions.
5. What are the risks of stablecoin lending?
Key risks include platform insolvency, smart contract exploits, regulatory changes, and depegging events where stablecoins temporarily lose their dollar peg. Choosing transparent, audited platforms helps reduce these risks.
6. How do CeFi and DeFi stablecoin lending differ?
CeFi puts administration with a provider under an agreement. DeFi uses contracts with network, oracle and governance dependencies. Neither guarantees steady returns or instant access. Identify who performs each function and what happens if it fails.
7. How much can I earn from stablecoin lending in 2026?
At a constant illustrative 5% APY, 10,000 tokens would produce 500 tokens over a year before fees or losses. Actual rates, balances and conditions change. APY already includes compounding; do not compound it again.
8. What makes Ledn different from other stablecoin lenders?
Ledn's stated differentiators include funding its Bitcoin-backed retail book, Growth separation by asset type and independent point-in-time Proof of Reserves. Its current brand disclosures report more than $11 billion funded since 2018 and zero client asset losses across eight years—a provider-reported operating history, not a future guarantee or protection from borrower liquidation. Open Book reporting adds defined loan metrics. These explain the model without promising zero future losses.
9. How do Ledn’s Proof of Reserves work?
Ledn's Proof of Reserves covers client, lending and custodial balances at a point in time and occurs every six months. Clients can verify inclusion using an anonymized identifier. It does not prove assets are never lent or guarantee future solvency.
10. What is the future of stablecoin lending?
Reporting and product structures may evolve. Assess the current arrangement rather than forecasting a fixed industry yield range. More reporting helps when its scope and date answer the actual question about your account.
