Ledn and Morpho offer different ways to access liquidity using Bitcoin exposure as collateral. Ledn is a lender offering native-BTC-backed loans, a defined agreement and fiat or stablecoin funding. Morpho is onchain lending infrastructure: your experience depends on the market and interface you use, including Coinbase’s DeFi Borrow product.

For a Bitcoin holder paying an expense through a bank account, Ledn’s combination of native BTC collateral, a quoted rate and loan documentation can simplify the borrowing route. For someone who needs USDC and already uses onchain finance, a suitable Morpho market may be a better operational fit. The comparison needs to cover the whole loan: interest, fees, asset conversion, collateral control and how the position ends.

See Ledn’s Bitcoin-backed loan rates and collateral requirements.

Key takeaways

  • Rates: Ledn’s published APR ranges from 9.25% to 11.49% by loan size. Morpho does not have one universal borrowing rate. Coinbase now documents both fixed- and variable-rate routes.
  • Funds received: Ledn offers eligible fiat and stablecoin payout methods. Coinbase’s Morpho-powered borrowing provides USDC; spending it through a bank requires a cash-out route.
  • Collateral: Ledn uses native BTC. Coinbase’s Bitcoin borrowing route converts the collateral into cbBTC for use on Morpho.
  • Liquidation: Ledn’s threshold is 80% LTV. Morpho thresholds belong to individual markets, not to the protocol as a whole.
  • Management: Both the loan structure and the interface matter. Ledn offers Auto Top-Up; Coinbase also documents a loan-protection feature with its own operating conditions.

Quick answer: which should you choose?

Ledn is worth considering if you want to keep your collateral in native Bitcoin, receive an available bank payout and manage the loan through a lender relationship. That combination is particularly relevant when the money will fund a business expense, a property transaction or another offchain purchase.

A Morpho route is worth considering if the required collateral token and loan asset already fit your financial activity. A borrower who wants USDC for an onchain expense has a different task from someone who must deliver dollars to a seller’s bank. Direct protocol access and Coinbase access are also different products: the latter has account eligibility, interface features and fees.

For either option, set the amount you need, your intended borrowing period and your repayment source before comparing the headline rate. Read our guide to getting a Bitcoin-backed loan for the wider process.

What is the difference between Ledn and Morpho?

Ledn: a native-Bitcoin-backed lending agreement

Ledn’s standard loan starts at 50% LTV and runs for 12 months. Borrowers complete identity verification, pledge BTC and receive funds through a method available in their jurisdiction. There are no required monthly payments and no early-repayment penalty. The applicable rate and terms are presented before commitment. These are features of a borrowing agreement, not an interest-earning account. Ledn product details.

Morpho: the market and interface determine the loan

In Morpho Blue, each market combines a collateral asset, loan asset, price oracle, liquidation loan-to-value threshold and interest-rate model. A market such as USDC against cbBTC is one configuration, not a description of every Morpho loan. The rules explain which assets can be supplied and when a position can be liquidated. Morpho market documentation.

Coinbase provides an interface to Morpho on Base. Its documentation now distinguishes variable-rate borrowing from fixed-rate borrowing. Variable loans have no scheduled maturity; fixed loans must be repaid by their maturity date, and early repayment does not reduce the interest owed. This means “Ledn fixed versus Morpho variable” is no longer a complete comparison. Coinbase DeFi Borrow overview.

Ledn vs Morpho interest rates and fees

Ledn’s pricing table uses five amount bands. The $2 million-plus tier is 9.25% APR. A larger total portfolio is not automatically the same as a larger individual loan: the pricing tier applies to the loan amount.

There is no single Morpho rate that can fairly be placed opposite that schedule. A variable market rate changes with market conditions; a fixed product has its own quotation and term. Do not treat an old “around 5%” illustration as a current executable offer.

Coinbase’s processing-fee documentation lists 2% on the first $250,000 and 1% on the portion above it. The fee is added to principal and accrues interest. It also describes a possible platform fee and warns that fixed-rate processing fees may differ. The underlying Morpho market rate therefore need not equal the cost of borrowing through Coinbase. Coinbase fee schedule.

For example, if a $50,000 draw carries a 2% financed processing fee, the initial debt becomes $51,000 before interest. This is a fee illustration, not a loan quote. Compare the cash received, debt created and total repayment over the same period. Do not add a fee again if it is already included in a provider’s APR.

USDC vs dollars: what you actually receive

USDC can be useful when the expense itself is onchain. When a supplier, property seller or other recipient requires bank money, conversion and withdrawal become part of the loan workflow. Account limits, settlement times and the recipient’s source-of-funds requirements can affect whether the money is usable by the deadline.

Consider a hypothetical $50,000 payment due through a bank. Compare the amount arriving in that account after any conversion or transfer costs—not just the amount of USDC borrowed. Keep the loan record, collateral transfers and bank trail together so the transaction can be explained.

Ledn provides loan documentation for its lending relationship. That is useful evidence, but neither a Ledn agreement nor an onchain transaction guarantees acceptance by a mortgage lender or closing professional. For property purchases, agree acceptable funding and documentation before borrowing. See Bitcoin-backed borrowing versus a home loan.

Liquidation and the tools to manage it

Ledn’s alerts, Auto Top-Up and liquidation threshold

Ledn sends LTV notifications at 70% and 75%. At or above 80%, liquidation is automatic and irreversible: collateral is sold to cover the balance, a 0.50% trade spread applies, and any remainder is returned. This is not a promise that a human will delay liquidation or keep the loan open. Ledn liquidation process.

Auto Top-Up can be enabled across eligible loans or per loan. At 70% LTV, it draws available BTC from the Transaction Account toward a 68% target. If the balance is insufficient, protection is limited by the BTC available. This gives borrowers a concrete management tool, but does not eliminate price risk. How Auto Top-Up works.

Morpho market thresholds and Coinbase loan protection

Morpho Blue supports different liquidation thresholds. An 86% threshold belongs to a particular market configuration, not every loan. Coinbase’s current loan-health guide directs customers to their own position’s LLTV. Its loan-protection feature can add collateral at a trigger, but must be enabled for each loan, is applied once before re-enabling, and depends on available funds. Coinbase loan health and protection.

Compare the actual trigger and liquidation cost together. A higher liquidation threshold is not an instruction to borrow more: doing so can leave less room for price falls. In a simplified example, $50,000 of debt against $100,000 of collateral is 50% LTV. If collateral falls to $62,500 while debt stays unchanged, LTV reaches 80%. Accrued interest and fees reduce that buffer further.

Security, custody and counterparty risk

Native Bitcoin versus tokenised collateral

Ledn avoids the BTC-to-token conversion required by Coinbase’s Bitcoin borrowing route. Coinbase’s collateral documentation explains that BTC is converted into cbBTC and locked on Morpho. The additional token and smart-contract dependencies are relevant to someone whose priority is borrowing against native BTC. They do not mean that native-BTC custody has no counterparty risk. Coinbase collateral mechanics.

What Ledn is permitted to do with collateral

For Custodied Loans, Ledn may re-post collateral only to an institutional USD funding partner or a Ledn-sponsored and managed financing vehicle. Its Help Center describes verifiable custody, legal ring-fencing or bankruptcy-remote structures, and a prohibition on lending that collateral out to generate interest. This is a specific funding arrangement—not an unrestricted right to use BTC for yield. Ledn custody policy.

Two different kinds of transparency

Morpho’s onchain design makes market transactions and positions inspectable. Ledn’s Proof-of-Reserves process uses an independent accountant to examine client liabilities and custodial assets at a point in time, with a way for clients to verify inclusion. Its Open Book reporting provides additional business and loan-book information.

Both are useful evidence, but answer different questions. A visible wallet does not explain every legal claim on its assets; an attestation is not a guarantee against future losses. Evaluate control of collateral, funding arrangements and the process for returning assets alongside the rate. Our custody-model guide explores those distinctions.

Repayment, renewal and the end of the loan

A defined term gives the borrower a date to plan around; it does not make repayment optional. Ledn’s renewal conditions include eligible jurisdiction and LTV below 65%. From 1 January 2027, accrued interest and applicable administration fees must also be cleared to renew or refinance. Eligible principal may continue into a new term at the rates then available.

The maturity process can use available stablecoins and then sell BTC to settle a shortfall and, if needed, reduce LTV to 64%. These maturity sales are distinct from the 80% price-driven liquidation threshold. Plan for both. Ledn renewal and refinancing policy.

For a Coinbase variable-rate loan, the absence of a scheduled maturity does not remove the need to monitor collateral and repay in the required asset. For a fixed-rate loan, include the maturity date and the fact that repaying early does not reduce the interest owed. The right comparison is the product you can actually open, not an assumed protocol-wide rule.

Which should you choose?

Ledn’s case is strongest when native Bitcoin collateral, a bank-compatible funding route and a lender relationship match your purpose. The quoted rate, management tools and defined maturity give you a concrete framework for planning the borrowing.

A Morpho route can suit borrowers whose assets, desired funding and operating experience already fit an onchain market. Its economics may be attractive, but include the chosen interface’s fees, the collateral token and the repayment mechanics before deciding.

The useful question is not which label—CeFi or DeFi—wins. It is which complete arrangement meets your cash need with costs and responsibilities you can manage. Check your Ledn rate and available funding options.

Frequently asked questions

Are Morpho interest rates always lower than Ledn’s?

No universal comparison is valid. Rates depend on the market, date, term and interface. Compare the offered rate plus fees over your expected holding period. A variable rate can change; a fixed-rate product has a different cost profile.

Is Morpho safe to borrow from?

Assess the specific collateral token, oracle, contracts, interface and liquidation rules. Onchain visibility is valuable, but does not remove those dependencies. Ledn presents a different set of custody and counterparty considerations rather than a risk-free alternative.

Can I get dollars from a Morpho loan?

Coinbase’s documented loan asset is USDC. It may be possible to convert and withdraw it through an available service; that is an additional step, not proof that bank funding is impossible. Other Morpho markets specify their own loan assets.

Does borrowing against Bitcoin trigger tax?

A loan, a token conversion and a sale of collateral are different transactions. Do not assume they receive the same tax treatment. Keep records of borrowing, any wrapping or unwrapping, and repayments or liquidations, and obtain advice for your jurisdiction.

Where are these loans available?

Eligibility depends on location and product. Ledn applies jurisdictional conditions; Coinbase applies its own account and regional requirements. Permissionless market creation on Morpho does not mean every interface offers unrestricted access. Check eligibility before transferring collateral.
