Aave and Morpho are worth comparing when you want to borrow through an on-chain lending market. Ledn belongs in the comparison when you want liquidity against native BTC under a lending agreement. Those are different operating models, not three interchangeable rates.

The practical question is what you start with and what you need at the end. Native Bitcoin in a wallet, a Bitcoin-linked token on a supported network and money required in a bank account each create a different borrowing path. Choose the path before comparing its quoted cost.

Review Ledn’s Bitcoin-backed loan model →

First decide whether you need on-chain funds or bank money

If you already hold an eligible collateral token and need a supported loan token on-chain, Aave or a suitable Morpho market may match that task without a bank payout being relevant. You still need to manage the market's risk and transactions.

If you hold native BTC and need money for a property or business payment, compare the complete path to accepted funds. An on-chain loan may involve a BTC representation, a borrowing transaction and a separate conversion or withdrawal. Ledn's available fiat routes can be relevant, but the receiving account, currency, eligibility and settlement timing must still be confirmed.

This distinction does not establish which route is faster or cheaper. It identifies the steps and costs that an actual comparison needs to include.

The table is a structural comparison, not an exhaustive description of every protocol version or product. In particular, Morpho also documents fixed-term infrastructure; identify the market rather than generalising from its brand.

The first question for a Bitcoin holder: native BTC or a token?

Established Aave and Morpho Bitcoin-collateral routes commonly use a representation such as WBTC or cbBTC on a supported smart-contract network. That is not native BTC sitting in your Bitcoin wallet. The representation adds issuance, custody and redemption arrangements to the lending position. Assess both the token and the particular lending market; one protocol name does not describe every available route.

Coinbase launched cbBTC in September 2024, backed by BTC held by Coinbase. WBTC’s history includes a 2024 BitGo/BiT Global custody partnership. These are different arrangements, not interchangeable promises that redemption can never be delayed. Read the current issuer terms and supported network before moving assets.

Tax treatment of wrapping, unwrapping and related transfers depends on jurisdiction and the legal substance of the transaction. Do not assume either that wrapping is always a taxable sale or that a one-to-one token representation makes every step tax-neutral. Keep transaction records and obtain advice for the actual route.

What the on-chain routes have in common

Users depend on contracts, collateral pricing and transactions executing on the selected network. Oracle errors, compromised interfaces, congestion and token failures can affect a position even when the core lending code operates as designed. Rates and available liquidity can change quickly. Governance powers and immutable parameters must be distinguished rather than assuming every condition can be changed by anyone.

Permissionless contracts and an account-based interface are different layers. Coinbase performs account verification; a direct protocol interaction may not involve the same process. Likewise, interface terms, token-issuer obligations and applicable law can create legal rights even where the protocol does not provide a conventional bilateral loan agreement. “No legal recourse anywhere” is not an accurate general description.

Aave: pooled borrowing and collateral dependencies

Aave borrowing uses supported collateral and loan assets. Its market rates respond to utilisation and configured interest-rate models. The health factor relates collateral value, liquidation thresholds and debt; a falling collateral price or growing debt can move a position toward liquidation. Check the deployment and protocol version, because assets and liquidation rules are not identical everywhere.

Direct use can suit someone already managing an on-chain portfolio and needing token liquidity. You coordinate the wallet, collateral approvals, borrowing and repayment transactions. Gas costs vary by chain and conditions, and adding collateral is useful only if the transaction completes before liquidation. Documentation or an interface support channel cannot necessarily reverse a valid on-chain liquidation.

The April 2026 rsETH incident: why external dependencies matter

On 18 April 2026, an attack on KelpDAO’s rsETH bridge released 116,500 rsETH, worth roughly $292 million at the time. LayerZero’s final report describes compromised RPC infrastructure and a forged cross-chain message accepted through the application’s single-verifier configuration. Its investigators attributed the attack to the DPRK-linked TraderTraitor group. This was not simply a bug that created native ETH inside Aave.

Aave service providers’ incident report describes attacker addresses supplying rsETH collateral and borrowing other assets. Aave froze affected reserves and adjusted interest-rate parameters. The report states that Aave’s own smart contracts were not compromised. Its central lesson is that a lending market can inherit problems from an accepted collateral asset or bridge even when its own code behaves as intended.

The liquidity aftermath also mattered. Bitquery’s subsequent on-chain analysis reports $12.4 billion of net withdrawals from Aave’s main market over 18–24 April and USDC/USDT borrowing costs rising from about 3.5% to 14%. Those are historical, scoped observations, not today’s rates. They illustrate why a borrower should test variable-rate affordability and a supplier should distinguish an account balance from immediately available liquidity. They do not prove every Aave market or user suffered the same outcome.

Morpho through Coinbase: identify the loan you are offered

Morpho Blue separates variable-rate markets by collateral asset, loan asset, oracle, interest-rate model and liquidation LTV. Isolation limits some direct exposure between markets; it does not eliminate shared dependencies such as a token issuer, oracle infrastructure or correlated selling. Morpho also has fixed-rate infrastructure, so the brand alone is not a complete description of a loan.

For Coinbase’s Bitcoin route, BTC becomes cbBTC and is supplied to a Morpho contract on Base, with USDC received as the borrowed asset. That can reduce the interface work for an existing Coinbase customer, while preserving dependencies on Coinbase’s custody and account systems, the token, Morpho, pricing and the network. USDC is not the same asset as dollars already settled in a bank account; conversion, transfer and stablecoin risks remain relevant.

Coinbase now offers variable and fixed-rate choices. Variable loans have no set maturity; fixed loans require repayment by maturity and early repayment does not reduce the interest owed. You cannot simply convert an existing loan between those types. Choose the actual loan type before comparing its rate or repayment flexibility.

Coinbase’s variable-loan processing schedule charges 2% on the first $250,000 and 1% above that, added to principal and accruing interest. Fixed-loan fees may differ. A platform fee may also apply, monthly for variable loans or upfront for fixed loans. Compare the review screen’s full cost rather than adding an approximate “1–2%” to a rate without understanding the base.

Loan Protection can automatically add available collateral when enabled. It applies once, must be re-enabled and expires after one year; insufficient balance or execution problems can prevent protection. Liquidation LTV and charges are market-specific. Coinbase’s collateral guide describes a 4.38% liquidation penalty for its familiar variable-loan route; fixed-loan overdue penalties follow a separate increasing schedule. For example, the familiar BTC route uses an 86% threshold, but that must not be applied to every collateral or fixed-term product. See Coinbase Loans alternatives.

Where do lower rates come from?

Automation can reduce operating friction, and abundant supplied liquidity can lower a variable borrowing rate. Collateral parameters, incentives, market competition, funding costs and risk appetite also influence price. A rate gap is not a direct measure of safety, nor evidence that every lender supplying funds is an unsophisticated retail user.

Institutional involvement is concrete but should be scoped. Apollo and Morpho announced a cooperation agreement in February 2026, while SG-FORGE announced stablecoin lending and borrowing integrations through partners in September 2025. These are not guarantees of a retail borrower’s position. Morpho’s Coinbase case study reports more than $3 billion in processed loans at this review, replacing the older $2.17 billion snapshot.

Compare equal principal and duration. As an illustration, $100,000 at an assumed unchanged 6% annual rate costs about $6,000 over a year before fees. A 2% origination charge adds $2,000 and, if capitalised, increases the balance earning interest. That is not a live quote. For a three-month loan, the upfront charge weighs much more heavily relative to interest, making a headline annual percentage an incomplete comparison.

Ledn: native BTC and a defined lending relationship

Ledn accepts native Bitcoin, avoiding a wrapped-token conversion for its standard BTC-backed loan. You receive a loan agreement and an account support relationship. The standard term is 12 months, with no required monthly payments before closure and no early-repayment penalty. A fixed offered rate avoids market-utilisation repricing during that term; it does not guarantee the same rate on a later loan or renewal.

The current pricing table lists 10.99% APR below $250,000; 10.49% from $250,000; 9.99% from $500,000; 9.75% from $1 million; and 9.25% from $2 million. Loans start at $500, and typical starting LTV is 50%. Confirm the eligible amount, payout route and final offer; headline funding speeds are not a promise that every borrower’s bank receives funds in six hours.

Collateral is not lent to generate interest, but restricted posting to institutional USD funding partners or Ledn financing vehicles can be permitted. Ledn describes verifiable custody and legal separation from its funding partner’s assets. These are substantive controls, not a claim that BTC never moves or a guarantee against every insolvency outcome. Read the custody-model explanation, the agreement and the relevant legal rights.

At 80% LTV, automatic closure can sell the amount of BTC needed to settle the loan and costs, returning the remainder. Alerts at 70% and 75% are not a guaranteed opportunity to react. Ledn’s Auto Top-up can help when enabled and adequately funded, but does not eliminate execution or market risk. For loans maturing from 1 January 2027, the documented renewal process requires accrued interest and fees to be cleared and eligible loans to meet the applicable jurisdiction and below-65% LTV conditions. A renewed 12-month loan uses the then-current rate; renewal is not an indefinite extension without repayment obligations.

Institutional funding evidence is useful when correctly described. Transaction counsel Orrick describes Ledn’s $188 million ABS, whose senior notes received S&P’s BBB- rating. The rating concerns those notes, not a blanket rating of every Ledn account. Proof of Reserves and Open Book reporting supply further evidence to review, not deposit insurance.

The estate-planning angle

For a directly managed on-chain position, a representative needs both legal authority and a workable access plan: wallet recovery, position location, collateral token, repayment asset and transaction procedure. Do not leave a live seed phrase in a public will. A familiar account interface can change the recovery process but does not remove the debt or collateral obligations.

Ledn supports beneficiary designations and works with an estate’s authorised representative under its documented beneficiary process. That does not promise liquidation suspension or automatic continuation after death. Record maturity and contact procedures, and review Bitcoin estate planning with counsel.

When each option makes sense

Aave can fit an experienced on-chain user who wants to manage supported collateral and token liquidity directly. Coinbase/Morpho can fit an eligible customer who values an integrated account experience and accepts its token, protocol and interface dependencies. Ledn is relevant when native BTC, a defined term and direct lending support match the required liquidity and repayment plan.

Native-BTC DeFi infrastructure is developing. The 14 October 2026 Babylon proposal requests activation of native BTC collateral through Aave V4 vault infrastructure. A proposal is not evidence that a given borrowing route is available in your account today. If implemented, assess its own vault, liquidation and redemption mechanics rather than assuming it inherits every feature of existing wrapped-token markets.

Frequently asked questions

Is Aave safer than Morpho?

There is no universal answer. Compare a specific deployment, collateral, oracle and liquidity position. Market isolation limits some exposures but does not make shared dependencies disappear.

Does Coinbase custody the underlying BTC?

For cbBTC, yes: Coinbase holds the backing BTC. The token supplied to the lending contract is a separate representation with its own redemption arrangements.

What happens if an Aave position suffers an exploit?

Recovery depends on the affected contracts, available funds and incident response. Aave’s Umbrella is an asset/network-specific bad-debt backstop funded by slashable stakes, not government insurance or guaranteed coverage of every loss. Do not assume the older AAVE-token Safety Module description captures all current arrangements.

Why might Ledn cost more?

It uses a different funding and servicing model and accepts native BTC. Compare its offered total cost with the particular DeFi route; do not assume a higher rate proves safety or that every DeFi market is cheaper.

Does Ledn lend collateral to earn interest?

No. Its restricted permitted posting is different from lending BTC for yield. The agreement still governs collateral handling and legal rights.

Can I borrow without wrapping BTC?

Ledn’s standard Bitcoin-backed loan uses native BTC. Check any proposed DeFi-native route separately; the established wrapped-token routes discussed above do not automatically become native-BTC products.

How do cbBTC and WBTC differ?

They have different issuers, custody arrangements and redemption processes. Both aim to represent BTC on supported networks. A common price target does not make their legal or operational dependencies identical.

What rate does Aave charge?

The relevant borrowing rate is the live rate for the chosen loan asset and deployment, not a universal “Bitcoin loan rate”. Test changes in utilisation and costs rather than treating a historical 3–6% range as a quote.

Can I borrow without selling Bitcoin?

A collateralised loan can avoid an immediate outright sale, but wrapping, repayment and liquidation can create separate tax questions. Borrowing preserves price exposure while adding debt; it does not guarantee the BTC will never need to be sold.

Compare the complete arrangement

Start with the asset needed at the end of the transaction. If you need funds in a bank account, include the conversion and withdrawal process for a token loan. If you need on-chain liquidity, compare the token and network directly.

Next compare the same loan amount and duration. A dynamic protocol rate is not a guaranteed annual cost. Include interface fees, transaction costs and liquidation charges where applicable. A low rate alone does not establish higher or lower safety.

Finally, ask who can help with a problem and which agreements apply. Avoid categorical claims that all DeFi has no legal recourse or that all centralised lenders offer the same protections. Our CeFi versus DeFi loan guide explains the distinction.

Choose the market or agreement you can manage

Compare Aave and Morpho at the level of the specific collateral, network and borrowing position. Compare Ledn when its native-BTC and term-loan structure fits the same need. Check Ledn's current terms, not just a headline rate, before transferring assets.
