Bitcoin Estate Planning: Custody, Beneficiaries & Loans

Ledn has over $10 billion in loan originations since 2018 and counting!
Updated 10 September 2026
A Bitcoin estate plan must solve two problems: who is legally entitled to the assets, and how an authorised person can actually access or administer them. A will that names Bitcoin but leaves no workable access process can fail operationally. A shared seed phrase without legal authority creates a different set of risks.
If you hold assets on Ledn, start with the beneficiary process and review it with your estate adviser. Beneficiary settings do not override applicable law or estate-administration requirements.
Build an inventory without exposing secrets
Record each wallet, custodian and account, its owner and the type of asset or obligation involved. Distinguish personal holdings from company or trust assets. Include any pledged BTC and outstanding debt rather than listing all coins as freely transferable.
The inventory should tell an authorised person where to find the access procedure. It should not casually contain seed phrases, private keys or complete login credentials in a shared document or ordinary email. Ask your advisers how confidential instructions should be held and released.
Match the access plan to the custody model
| Holding | Operational question | Planning task |
|---|---|---|
| Self-custodied BTC | Who can recover and use the keys? | Secure recovery instructions and an appropriate authorisation process |
| Multisignature arrangement | Which parties can meet the signing threshold? | Coordinate key-holder continuity and replacement arrangements |
| Custodial account | What evidence will the provider require? | Record provider contacts and beneficiary/estate procedures |
| Pledged loan collateral | What debt and deadlines remain? | Document the agreement, maturity and collateral-management responsibilities |
A recovery plan should be tested without exposing live credentials or transferring assets unnecessarily. Review it after a change of wallet, custodian, family circumstances or account ownership.
What Ledn’s beneficiary feature does
Ledn’s published help page allows account holders to add one or more beneficiaries. It describes collecting beneficiary information through account settings and says Ledn works with the estate’s authorised representative after an account holder dies.
Legal documentation may be required. The help page does not establish a universal probate timeline, immediate payout or exemption from local estate rules. Make sure the designation is consistent with your will, trusts, ownership structure and jurisdiction with qualified legal advice.
Tell the appropriate person that an account exists and how to contact the provider. Do not assume they should log in as the deceased or use credentials in a way that conflicts with account terms or legal authority.
Outstanding Bitcoin-backed loans need a separate plan
An estate may need to manage principal, interest, maturity and collateral exposure while administration is underway. Do not assume death automatically cancels the debt, pauses LTV monitoring or guarantees protection from liquidation. Obtain written guidance about the applicable agreement and servicing process from the lender and your adviser.
Document a possible repayment source and who can communicate with the lender. If repayment may require selling BTC, consider the operational and tax implications with advisers. A price decline can create a need for action before an estate is ready to distribute assets.
Review Bitcoin-backed loan terms, custody arrangements and loan management. Custody controls do not themselves establish inheritance rights.
Questions for your estate adviser
- Does the ownership record match the intended beneficiaries?
- Can an authorised person locate and administer each holding without unsafe credential sharing?
- How do beneficiary designations interact with local law and existing documents?
- Who can manage collateral and loan obligations during administration?
- What valuation, reporting and tax requirements apply to this estate?
There is no universal inheritance outcome or timetable for every Bitcoin holder. A useful plan joins legal authority, secure access and a realistic process for outstanding obligations. Review all three periodically rather than treating a beneficiary field as the entire solution.
