What (exactly) are Bitcoin-Backed Loans?

Bitcoin-backed loans are loans secured by using BTC as collateral. Borrowers deposit their digital assets with a lender to receive a loan in fiat currency or another cryptocurrency. The loan amount is typically a percentage of the collateral's value, known as the loan-to-value (LTV) ratio.

What are Traditional Loans?

Traditional loans are financial products offered by banks, credit unions, and other financial institutions. They can be secured (i.e. backed by collateral like a house or car) or unsecured (based on the borrower's creditworthiness). The borrower repays the loan in installments over a set period, with interest. You can access a loan by collateralizing something, such as money or other worthwhile assets, or you may be able to access one without handing anything over at all (making it uncollateralized).

Credit history can influence a conventional lender's decision and pricing, alongside income, debt, collateral and product requirements. A strong score is not a guarantee of approval or a particular rate.

Compare two offers that fund the same job

Start with the net amount needed, the receiving currency and expected borrowing period. If a loan requires conversion before you can spend the proceeds, include that step. If another amortises over several years, compare the outstanding principal at your chosen repayment date as well as payments already made.

For a hypothetical $15,000 expense, a lower monthly payment can reflect a longer term rather than a lower cost. A loan with no required monthly payments can leave nearly the whole principal due later. Those are different cash-flow patterns, not evidence of free financing.

Ask both providers for the actual repayment schedule and charges. A category-level headline is not a substitute for an eligible quote.

The Key Differences Between Bitcoin-Backed Loans and Traditional Loans

Collateral Requirements

Bitcoin-backed Loans: Require BTC as collateral. The LTV ratio determines the loan amount.

Traditional Loans: May require collateral like real estate or vehicles if they’re secured. Alternatively, unsecured loans typically rely on creditworthiness.

Interest Rates

Ledn’s current pricing table lists APRs by loan amount: 10.99% below $250,000; 10.49% from $250,000; 9.99% from $500,000; 9.75% from $1 million; and 9.25% from $2 million. Eligibility and the offered agreement determine the applicable terms.

Bitcoin-backed loans: collateral can support competitive borrowing terms, but compare actual APR and charges. A BTC-secured offer is not automatically cheaper than a mortgage, secured bank facility or every unsecured loan.

Traditional Loans: Interest rates vary based on the type of loan, collateral, and borrower’s credit score. Secured loans typically have lower rates than unsecured loans.

Market Conditions

Bitcoin-backed loans: BTC trades around the clock, so LTV can change while banks or your team are offline. Sending extra collateral requires the relevant confirmations and platform processing. A continuous market does not mean every response completes instantly.

‍

Traditional loans: valuation, margining and enforcement depend on the product. A securities-backed credit facility and a property mortgage can react very differently to a market move; do not assume all traditional collateral is managed slowly.

‍

Geographical status:

Bitcoin-backed loans: the collateral is globally traded, but the lender's eligibility, accepted funding route and legal requirements remain location-specific. Bitcoin's technology does not override restrictions on borrowing or financial services.

‍

Traditional loans: providers often operate within particular countries or markets, with local underwriting, collateral and legal requirements. Compare a product actually available to the borrower, not a headline offer from an ineligible jurisdiction.

‍

Credit Checks

Bitcoin-backed loans: Ledn does not use a traditional credit check for its product, but verifies identity and eligibility and requires native BTC collateral. Do not assume that every crypto-related product has identical underwriting.

Traditional loans: underwriting may assess credit history, income, cash flow and assets. The exact checks depend on the provider and product; pre-existing credit can be more accessible than a fresh application.

Approval Process and Time

Bitcoin-backed loans: approval and funding depend on verification, collateral receipt and payout settlement. Separate the application decision from the point when money is available to spend.

Traditional loans: an existing credit line can be available quickly, while a property or business application can involve valuation and documentation. Compare the full process for the actual alternatives.

Accessibility and Inclusivity

Bitcoin-backed loans: an eligible holder whose wealth is concentrated in BTC may find collateral-based underwriting useful. Access still requires the supported location, borrower profile and permitted purpose.

Traditional Loans: Accessibility depends on the borrower’s jurisdiction of residence, creditworthiness, and the lender’s requirements.

Pros and Cons of Bitcoin-Backed Loans and Traditional Loans

Let’s take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of these two options.

Bitcoin-Backed Loans: Pros

✅ Collateral-based process: can avoid traditional income-and-credit underwriting, although verification and settlement remain.

✅ Retain Bitcoin exposure: obtain usable funds without an initial sale, while accepting the loan's costs and restrictions.

✅ Alternative route for eligible holders: native BTC can support borrowing where another provider does not recognise that asset.

‍

Bitcoin-Backed Loans: Cons

❌ Volatility of Collateral: The value of your Bitcoin collateral can fluctuate. Significant decreases in collateral value may lead to liquidation to cover the outstanding loan amount..

❌ Regulatory Uncertainty: Bitcoin-backed loans are subject to changing regulations, which can impact their availability and terms.

❌ Security Concerns: Storing and managing Bitcoin involves security risks, including hacks and theft. When you use a custodial service, such as a crypto lending provider, the onus is on them to look after it. But once it returns to you, you’ll have to put the right measures in place to ensure safety.

‍

Traditional Loans: Pros

✅ Established legal frameworks: conventional credit may offer protections under applicable local laws. Verify those protections for the particular lender and product.

✅ Wide Range of Options: Various loan types are available to meet different needs, from personal loans to mortgages.

✅ Scheduled repayment choices: fixed-rate amortising products can provide a defined payment path; variable-rate and interest-only products differ.

‍

Traditional Loans: Cons

❌ Stringent Approval Criteria: Traditional loans often require a good credit score and thorough credit checks, limiting accessibility.

❌ Higher Interest Rates for Unsecured Loans: Unsecured loans typically have higher interest rates due to the increased risk to lenders.

‍

❌ Longer Processing Times: The approval process can be lengthy, involving significant paperwork and time.

❌ Geographic restrictions: Traditional loans are harder to access in some regions, compared to others.

Approval criteria do not establish whether the loan is affordable

Ledn does not use a traditional credit check for its Bitcoin-backed product, but still requires eligible BTC, verification and an eligible location. That can make it relevant to a BTC holder evaluating collateral-based borrowing; it does not prove that someone declined for another loan can safely take this one.

The repayment resources still matter. If the original difficulty is insufficient income or a recurring cash shortage, pledging an asset may add risk without solving that underlying problem. If the issue is a defined gap before expected funds arrive, compare whether the term and reserve requirements fit it.

Traditional lenders may accept different collateral or underwrite repayment from income. Credit the alternative where its structure better matches the expense, rather than treating documentation as an argument against it.

For company borrowing, consider business-loan authority and repayment planning; the Bitcoin loan pros and cons also separates collateral access from affordability.

Use Cases: When to Choose One Over the Other

Traditional loans and Bitcoin-Backed loans both serve a purpose in the financial world, and so there are some situations where one will suit you over the other. Let’s take a look at two common use-cases, one covering each option.

‍

Bitcoin-Backed Loans: Seeking Fiat Without Losing Your Position

In its September 2024 market commentary, Ledn reported that it had not paused loans or withdrawals during the industry disruption discussed there. This is historical provider-reported evidence, not a guarantee of future uninterrupted access.

One reason people turn to Bitcoin-backed loans is because they are in need of fiat, but feel uncomfortable leaving their BTC position. Many people believe in Bitcoin’s future, and so they’d rather avoid selling so they can still enjoy the benefits. Bitcoin-backed loans allow them to do this by collateralizing their digital assets in return for fiat, which can help with paying bills or other immediate purchases in the short-term.

‍

Traditional Loans: High-Worth Collateral

Traditional loans work well for people who have a high-worth of assets that are not crypto-based. This includes cars, fine art, precious metals, real estate, etc. They’re great for collateralizing, especially if the owner knows they can pay the loan back in the future. The option becomes especially enticing if they have a favorable credit history, as it could allow for better loan-terms.

Why Should You Use Ledn For Your Bitcoin-Backed Loan?

If you have decided that a Bitcoin-backed loan is right for you, Ledn strives to offer secure, transparent, and user-friendly loans with competitive interest rates. They provide flexible loan terms, no monthly interest payments or penalties for early repayment, and robust security measures, including AES-256 encryption and supported account authentication, including passkeys and hardware security keys.

Flexible Loan Terms

Ledn’s standard term is 12 months, with no required monthly payments and no early repayment penalty. Interest accrues daily. From 1 January 2027, accrued interest and fees must be cleared at maturity or mid-term refinancing. Eligible principal may renew with LTV below 65% under a new agreement; if needed, available stablecoins and a minimum BTC sale can cover charges and bring LTV to 64%. Flexibility is not an unlimited maturity extension.

‍

Loan Options

Ledn offers a variety of loan options to meet different needs:

‍

Custodied Loans: native BTC remains in verifiable custody and may be re-posted only to specified institutional USD funding partners or Ledn-managed financing vehicles, with ring-fencing or bankruptcy-remote structures. Neither Ledn nor those parties may lend it out to generate interest. Read the collateral model.

Read more about Ledn Custodied Loans and Bitcoin-backed Loans and Custody Models.

B2X: combines a BTC-backed loan with purchasing more BTC where available. Both the original and purchased Bitcoin secure the loan. It increases gross exposure, not net wealth, because debt and charges remain. A price decline can magnify equity losses and trigger liquidation.

‍

Transparency and Client-First Philosophy

Ledn publishes monthly Open Book Reports and periodic Proof of Reserves attestations. They provide concrete operational and balance information, with dates and defined scope; they should not be read as guarantees of future solvency.

‍

Security and Trust

Ledn lists White Star Capital, 10T, Kingsway Capital and Coinbase Ventures among its investors. It also provides SOC 2 Type 2 information through its trust centre. Investor backing and controls reporting are useful context, not guarantees of investment outcomes or the return of every pledged coin.

FAQs

Are Bitcoin-backed loans safe?

The risks pertaining to Bitcoin-backed loans can be mitigated if conducted through reputable platforms with robust security measures and appropriate risk management. However, borrowers should understand the risks, including price volatility and regulatory uncertainties.

What happens if the value of my BTC collateral drops?

Ledn sends notifications at 70% and 75% LTV. At 80%, liquidation is automatic and irreversible, settling the balance and costs with a 0.50% trade spread and returning any remaining collateral. Funded Auto Top-Up can move Transaction Account BTC at 70% toward a 68% target; it cannot guarantee avoidance of liquidation.

Can I get a Bitcoin-backed loan without collateral?

A Bitcoin-backed loan is secured by BTC by definition. An unsecured loan is a separate product that may be underwritten against income or creditworthiness. Ledn requires eligible collateral.

Can I use a Bitcoin-backed loan for a mortgage?

Loan proceeds may fund a property purchase or accepted down payment, but Ledn’s product is not a conventional property mortgage. A mortgage lender must accept any borrowed deposit and source-of-funds documentation. See Bitcoin borrowing versus a home loan.

Can I use a Bitcoin loan to buy more Bitcoin?

Buying more Bitcoin is one possible eligible use, including through B2X where available. Confirm purpose and location eligibility; do not assume unrestricted use. Buying more BTC increases exposure to the same asset that secures the debt.

Conclusion

Compare products that provide the same net proceeds for the same planned period. BTC-backed borrowing can retain market exposure with collateral-based underwriting; conventional credit may offer a longer repayment structure or avoid pledging BTC. The right comparison includes fees, maturity, custody and a realistic setback scenario.
