The right alternative to Coinbase's crypto-backed loan depends on what you want to change: the collateral you pledge, the funds you receive, the rate structure or the responsibility for managing an on-chain position.

Coinbase provides eligible customers an interface to Morpho on Base with USDC proceeds. Ledn is worth comparing if you want a native-BTC-backed loan with an available bank payout route and a defined term. Aave, Strike, Figure, SALT and Nexo address other combinations of on-chain access, lending structure and collateral choice. None is a universal replacement for every borrower.

Choose the change you actually need

If the expense is payable in a bank account, examine how borrowed USDC becomes the accepted currency, what it costs and when it settles. A low market rate does not answer those questions. If you already need USDC on-chain, that conversion may not be part of your workflow at all.

If your concern is collateral, distinguish native BTC held under a lending agreement from a Bitcoin-linked token used by an on-chain market. If your concern is interest, compare all charges over the intended duration rather than comparing one interface's total price with another protocol's market rate.

This is a brand-published comparison of documented structures, not a claim of independent hands-on testing or proof that existing Coinbase customers should switch.

What are Coinbase Loans, and are they DeFi?

Coinbase provides an account interface to borrowing through Morpho on Base. For the familiar BTC route, native Bitcoin is represented by cbBTC, whose backing BTC is held by Coinbase, and that token is supplied as collateral to an on-chain lending market. The borrowed asset is USDC. This combines a verified Coinbase account and custodial token issuer with smart-contract lending; it is not simply a conventional loan funded from Coinbase’s own balance sheet.

The distinction helps you identify the dependencies: account access, the token issuer and redemption process, Base, the selected Morpho market, its price feed and available liquidity. A familiar app can simplify the workflow without removing those dependencies. Morpho is a protocol, not one universal rate or one loan agreement. Coinbase’s interface adds its own eligibility, fees and support arrangements.

Coinbase’s current introduction describes both variable and fixed loans. Variable borrowing has no set term; fixed borrowing has a maturity date, and early repayment does not reduce the fixed interest owed. An overdue fixed loan can become eligible for liquidation. You cannot simply convert an existing loan between types. Eligible collateral now extends beyond BTC, but availability and parameters depend on the actual product.

The variable-loan processing fee is 2% on the first $250,000 and 1% above that. It is added to principal and accrues interest. Fixed-loan fees may differ, and a platform fee may apply monthly to variable loans or upfront to fixed loans. Gas sponsorship does not mean the loan is free of charges. Coinbase also restricts using loan proceeds for trading on Coinbase.

Loan Protection can add available collateral automatically when enabled, but applies once and must be re-enabled; it expires after a year and depends on sufficient available assets and successful execution. The familiar BTC variable route has an 86% liquidation threshold and a 4.38% liquidation penalty. Do not apply those parameters to every collateral or to fixed-loan overdue penalties.

How to assess DeFi risk without treating every platform alike

The relevant risks include contract errors, compromised signing infrastructure, oracle failures, wrapped-token backing, liquidity and the ability to manage collateral during volatility. An audit can reduce uncertainty about a specified code version, but does not certify every future upgrade, integration or operational dependency. Centralised lending introduces its own custody, funding, legal and insolvency risks.

Chainalysis reported more than $3.4 billion stolen across crypto from January through early December 2025, including the $1.5 billion Bybit incident. That is not a DeFi-only loss total. Its analysis also found suppressed DeFi hack losses during 2024–2025 despite growing value locked. Using an industry-wide theft number as if it measured one lending protocol would misstate the evidence.

A concrete integration failure occurred on 18 April 2026. LayerZero’s final KelpDAO incident report describes a forged cross-chain message that released 116,500 rsETH, valued at about $292 million, through compromised infrastructure and a single-verifier configuration. Some assets were used to borrow from Aave. Aave’s incident report distinguishes that external dependency from its own protocol code, which was not compromised.

The practical question is whether you understand every component that can affect the collateral and debt—not whether the label says CeFi or DeFi. Security testing and monitoring, including automated tools, can help both defenders and attackers; they do not justify a numerical prediction about future losses. Review incident response, signing controls and recovery arrangements alongside audits. See the risks of DeFi loans for the fuller framework.

Six Coinbase/Morpho alternatives compared

Information was reviewed on 26 October 2026. Published examples and starting rates are not equivalent individual quotes. Compare the same amount, initial LTV, duration, payout currency and repayment schedule. The history column distinguishes company beginnings from product launches; neither establishes safety.

Ledn: native Bitcoin and a defined repayment plan

Ledn is relevant if you want native BTC collateral, a direct lending relationship and an available bank or stablecoin payout. Its pricing table lists 10.99% APR below $250,000; 10.49% from $250,000; 9.99% from $500,000; 9.75% from $1 million; and 9.25% from $2 million. Loans start at $500, typically at 50% LTV. Eligibility and final terms govern the actual offer.

The standard term is 12 months, with daily interest accrual, no required monthly payments before closure and no early-repayment penalty. That can suit a defined cash need with a planned repayment source. It differs from an open-ended variable credit arrangement and from fixed loans whose interest does not reduce on early repayment.

Collateral is not lent out for yield, although restricted posting to institutional USD funding partners or Ledn financing vehicles can be permitted. Ledn describes verifiable custody and legal separation from funding-partner assets. Review those controls and your contractual rights; they are not a promise that BTC never moves or immunity from every insolvency outcome. Monthly Open Book reporting and six-monthly Proof of Reserves attestations provide evidence to inspect rather than a guarantee based on a past track record.

At 80% LTV, automatic closure can sell enough collateral to settle debt and costs, returning the remainder. Alerts and Auto Top-up do not guarantee intervention before a rapid move. For maturities from 1 January 2027, the documented renewal process requires accrued interest and fees to be cleared and eligible loans to satisfy the jurisdiction and below-65% LTV conditions; the renewed term uses the then-current rate.

Aave: manage an on-chain borrowing position directly

Aave can fit a user comfortable selecting a deployment, supported collateral and borrowed token, then executing and monitoring transactions from a wallet. Established BTC-linked routes use compatible token representations rather than assuming a native Bitcoin address can be pledged directly. Rates respond to market conditions; no single 0.36% average or maximum LTV represents every Aave loan.

Compare the selected health-factor and liquidation rules, wallet costs and available liquidity. Open protocol access is different from the eligibility rules of a particular interface. Aave Labs dates ETHLend to 2017 and Aave V1 to January 2020. The length of that history does not remove risks in newer collateral and integrations. For a closer structural comparison, read Aave versus Morpho versus Ledn.

Strike: Bitcoin-focused term loans or a line of credit

Strike’s US borrowing page illustrates a $10,000, 12-month loan at 50% LTV with 11.25% APR, no origination fee and $11,125 due at maturity. This is an example, not a universal minimum rate. Its credit products are available in selected US states; the lender can depend on the product and location.

Strike also offers a line of credit. Its rate guidance lists a variable 11.25% APR, calculated from US Prime plus a margin and potentially recalculated quarterly. Interest accrues on the amount drawn. Compare that flexibility with a term loan, including payment obligations and margin rules. Strike’s history dates founding to 2019, public launch to 2020 and Bitcoin-backed loans to 2025. International payout and eligibility arrangements differ; do not assume a US cash route applies everywhere.

Figure: MPC custody and interest-only payments

Figure’s published calculator lists 8.91% interest, equivalent to 9.999% APR at 50% LTV, with a 1% origination fee. The interest rate is not the APR. It advertises borrowing up to 75% LTV with terms depending on collateral and LTV; the lower-rate example must not be applied automatically to that higher advance.

Its current offering describes BTC, ETH and SOL collateral and a 12-month term. Its calculator FAQ offers monthly interest-only payments or deferred interest, describing a fee for deferral; the final offer determines the applicable charges. Compare the actual payment schedule rather than assuming every Figure borrower must pay monthly. Available funding routes and jurisdiction restrictions matter as well as price.

Figure’s MPC explanation describes separate signing shares and a required quorum, plus a segregated wallet whose balance can be checked on-chain. This is not simply two complete private keys that must both approve every transaction. Figure states that it does not rehypothecate BTC or ETH in this arrangement. Understand the signing policy, recovery procedure and liquidation authority rather than equating MPC with unrestricted borrower control.

SALT: different terms and repayment structures

SALT’s personal-loan page publishes 7.49%–10.50% APR, including applicable interest and origination charges, with a $5,000 minimum and 30%, 50% or 70% LTV options. It lists one-, three- and five-year terms and USD, USDC or USDT proceeds. Eligible collateral includes BTC, ETH, USDC, USDT and SALT.

Depending on eligibility, repayment structures include monthly interest-only, principal-and-interest or financed interest due at maturity. Financed-interest loans cannot be refinanced before maturity. No prepayment penalty does not make those schedules interchangeable: compare actual total payments and when they fall due. SALT’s company history dates founding to 2016.

Nexo: a multi-asset credit line

Nexo lists BTC at 50% LTV and offers a credit line against a broader range of cryptoassets, with bank or USDC/USDT routes where eligible. Its advertised starting rate is 1.9% annually, not an unconditional rate for every BTC borrower. Pricing depends on region, loyalty tier and other conditions; the loyalty programme links benefits to NEXO holdings relative to the portfolio.

The credit line has no fixed repayment dates or minimum instalments, but rising LTV can cause automatic partial repayment using collateral. Flexible payment timing is therefore not protection against a forced disposal. Compare collateral-use rights, withdrawal routes and the cost and risk of maintaining qualifying token holdings before treating the starting rate as the cheapest option.

These are reasons to investigate, not safety rankings. Follow each provider's current documentation and individual quote; eligibility can exclude an otherwise suitable option.

Match the alternative to the actual expense

For example, someone raising money for a business invoice should compare usable bank proceeds and repayment timing. Someone managing an existing on-chain position should compare the token and network they actually need. The same advertised rate can be relevant to one and incomplete for the other.

Use a common cash-flow worksheet. Record principal received, upfront charges, interest over your expected duration, conversion costs and the amount due at exit. A hypothetical $50,000 loan with a 2% upfront charge starts with $1,000 in fees before interest. Over a short borrowing period, that fee can outweigh a modest difference in annual interest. If it is added to the debt, include interest on the financed charge too.

Also test collateral stress. At 50% starting LTV, a $50,000 loan requires $100,000 of collateral. A 30% price decline reduces that collateral to $70,000 and raises LTV to about 71.4%, before accrued interest. That is not a prediction or a universal liquidation trigger; it shows why starting LTV, alerts and closure rules belong in the comparison.

Switching safely

Plan repayment of the existing position, collateral release and funding of the new loan. A second lender cannot necessarily fund against collateral still pledged elsewhere. Allow for settlement time and a market move during the transition. Confirm taxes and fees before wrapping, unwrapping or selling any asset.

Compare before moving collateral

Start with the feature of the existing arrangement you need to change. If native BTC and a term loan fit, review Ledn's offer. If Coinbase already supplies the right asset and structure, switching solely for a displayed rate may not justify the costs and transition risk.
