If your business holds bitcoin or other crypto, you might be wondering: how do you access cash without selling an asset you want to keep?

A crypto-backed business loan pledges eligible digital assets to obtain cash without an initial sale. It can finance taxes, an operating cash gap or a defined opportunity while retaining price exposure. The pledged assets are restricted, however, and can be liquidated if the loan's conditions are breached.

This guide explains how crypto business loans work in 2026, how they differ from bank loans, the risks to understand upfront, and how to evaluate lenders so you know exactly what you’re signing up for.

What is a crypto business loan?

A crypto-backed business loan is secured against cryptocurrency rather than being based solely on an unsecured assessment of trading performance. A lender still has eligibility and verification requirements. Company cash flow matters to your repayment plan even when it is not the primary basis of underwriting.

These loans are over-collateralised by design, meaning you put up more value than you borrow. If prices fall, you may need to add collateral or repay part of the loan to avoid liquidation.

Businesses tend to use these loans for short-term needs: covering taxes, smoothing cash flow, funding operations, or acting quickly when timing matters.

How crypto business loans work

The application is asset-backed, but the company still needs to establish ownership, authority and the receiving-account arrangements.

You start by choosing a lender. What matters most here is transparency, which comes from clear loan-to-value (LTV) thresholds, defined liquidation rules, and straightforward custody. Some platforms support many assets. Others, like Ledn, focus on bitcoin only.

Expect identity and company verification, including beneficial owners and authority to borrow where required. Verification is an important process, not proof by itself that a provider has every necessary authorisation or is financially secure.

Review the interest, fees, LTV, liquidation and repayment terms before transferring collateral. Confirm who owns the BTC, who may authorise the transfer and how the transaction will be recorded for accounting, audit and tax. Follow the instructions for the correct borrowing entity.

Funding follows approval, collateral receipt and the selected payout route. Account for compliance review and bank processing before promising a payment date to employees or suppliers.

How to qualify for a crypto business loan

With crypto business loans, the key factor is your collateral.

Lenders look at what asset you’re using, how liquid it is, how volatile it is, and how much you’re trying to borrow against it. Some platforms may ask for basic business information. Others may have jurisdiction-specific requirements.

A higher LTV gives less room for a collateral decline. It does not automatically mean a higher or lower rate: pricing rules are product-specific, and Ledn's published tiers depend on the individual loan amount.

How repayments work on a crypto business loan

Repayment structures vary. Compare the cash-flow pattern, not just whether a loan is described as flexible.

Ledn's standard loan has a 12-month term, no required monthly payments and no early repayment penalty. Partial repayments can lower debt and LTV. Interest still accrues daily, so keeping the loan open has a cost even without a monthly bill.

Before borrowing, check whether interest is fixed or variable, whether it compounds, whether there are origination or processing fees, and whether liquidation fees apply.

Plan beyond the first operating cycle

From 1 January 2027, accrued interest and fees must be paid at maturity or mid-term refinancing. Eligible principal can renew only under the offered conditions, including LTV below 65%. Stablecoin balances may be applied and BTC sold to cover any shortfall and, where necessary, reach 64% LTV. Treat renewal as a conditional new agreement, not committed long-term finance.

How crypto loans differ from traditional business loans

A bank loan may be underwritten against business cash flow, credit history, guarantees or pledged assets. A crypto-backed loan relies on eligible digital collateral. Both create a debt the business must manage.

Collateral-based underwriting can help a company whose BTC holdings are not recognised in a conventional credit application. It does not guarantee faster funding or remove local eligibility checks. Borrowing and selling can receive different tax treatment; a collateral sale can still create tax consequences. Review the proposed transaction with the business's adviser.

The distinguishing risk is how quickly collateral value can change. BTC trades continuously, and an LTV-triggered sale can occur much faster than a property sale or conventional enforcement process. Strong business revenues do not prevent a BTC price decline or suspend the loan's liquidation rules.

What drives interest rates for crypto business loans?

Pricing reflects the provider, funding costs, amount, term and collateral model. Ledn’s current published pricing table lists 10.99% APR below $250,000; 10.49% from $250,000; 9.99% from $500,000; 9.75% from $1 million; and 9.25% from $2 million. The individual offer and jurisdiction govern. Lowering LTV does not automatically change these amount-based tiers.

Rates can change over time and aren’t guaranteed, so when you’re comparing platforms, look beyond the headline APR. You need to know liquidation thresholds, fees, and how much control you have if markets move quickly.

How to evaluate crypto business loan lenders

There are many crypto lenders out there, but they’re not all equal. The differences show up in how your collateral is handled, how risk is managed, and how much control you keep once the loan is live.

Start with custody and permitted use. Ledn’s Custodied Loans allow restricted re-posting to an institutional USD funding partner or managed financing vehicle, with verifiable custody and ring-fencing or bankruptcy-remote arrangements. The collateral cannot be lent out to generate interest. Reserve attestations provide evidence within a stated scope; they do not replace the agreement or establish complete future solvency.

Next comes risk management. LTV limits, margin call levels, and liquidation thresholds should be clear from day one. The earlier you’re notified when prices move, the more room you have to respond. Features like alerts or partial repayments can make a difference if markets turn fast.

Finally, look past the headline rate. Interest can change and fees aren’t always obvious. Repayment rules will impact cash flow and flexibility over time. These details determine how predictable the loan feels once it’s in motion, not just how attractive it looks on day one.

The upsides and the risks of crypto business loans

The potential benefit is capital without an initial BTC sale, using collateral-based underwriting and retaining market exposure. Confirm that the business purpose is eligible. No required monthly payment preserves near-term cash flow but leaves the balance to be dealt with at maturity.

The risk is that crypto prices can move fast. If your collateral drops sharply, you could face margin calls or liquidation. Regulations differ by country, and platform reputability makes a big difference.

What actually happens if bitcoin’s price falls while your loan is open?

Crypto business loans come with a buffer. You put up more bitcoin than the amount you borrow so the lender has protection if prices move.

If bitcoin’s price falls, the value of your collateral drops while your loan stays the same. That pushes your LTV higher. When it reaches certain levels, the lender may step in and ask you to either add more bitcoin or repay part of the loan. This is called a margin call.

If you don’t act and prices keep falling, the lender can sell some or all of your bitcoin to close the loan and recover the funds. In fast markets, that can happen quickly. That’s why a lender sets LTV thresholds, sends alerts, and handles liquidation matters.

Ledn sends LTV notifications at 70% and 75%, with automatic, irreversible liquidation at 80%. It sells enough collateral to settle the debt and costs, applies a 0.50% trade spread and returns remaining BTC. Auto Top-Up can add available Transaction Account BTC at 70% toward a 68% target where enabled. A funded reserve helps, but neither an alert nor the tool guarantees time to prevent a liquidation.

Match a short-term cash gap with a credible repayment source

Consider a hypothetical business that needs $50,000 to pay suppliers and expects a customer payment in 90 days. Borrowing against BTC could cover that timing gap while keeping exposure to the pledged asset. But the customer payment has to cover the debt and borrowing costs, not just replenish inventory.

Now test the uncomfortable version: the invoice is disputed and Bitcoin falls before the customer pays. The same business may need money for operating expenses, repayment and collateral management at once. If it cannot handle that overlap, a smaller loan, a supplier arrangement or another funding source may fit better.

Funding a multiyear expansion is a different proposition. A project can be promising and still fail to generate cash before a short-term loan matures. Do not use an expected future valuation as if it were scheduled cash flow.

Give collateral management an owner

Before drawing, document who monitors LTV, who can approve a top-up, which account holds reserves and who takes over if that person is unavailable. “The finance team will handle it” is not a usable procedure during a fast price move.

A partial repayment can reduce debt; adding BTC commits more treasury assets. Neither should be an unplanned transfer from money already needed for payroll. Record an internal action point below the provider's liquidation threshold and confirm the settlement time for the chosen response.

When a crypto business loan makes sense

These loans work best if your business already holds crypto, you need short-term liquidity, and you understand how to manage LTV risk.

When a crypto business loan may not be the right choice

Crypto business loans aren’t always the right solution. If your business can’t actively monitor price movements, can’t add collateral quickly, or needs long-term fixed-rate financing, they probably aren’t the best option for you. They also carry risk if your business can’t tolerate volatility or forced liquidation.

Why businesses use Ledn for bitcoin loans

How lenders handle custody, risk controls, and liquidation varies widely. That’s where provider choice matters.

Ledn offers native-BTC borrowing with a 12-month standard term, no traditional credit check, no required monthly payments and no prepayment penalty. Its collateral cannot be lent out to earn interest under the Custodied Loan model. Monthly Open Book Reports and Proof of Reserves provide defined transparency evidence. Eligibility, corporate verification and the offered agreement still govern.

B2X combines a loan with a purchase of additional Bitcoin where available. That is a leveraged treasury investment, not a source of operating revenue: it increases downside as well as upside exposure and should be assessed separately from funding payroll or inventory.

FAQs on crypto business loans in 2026

What is a crypto business loan?

It is borrowing secured by eligible cryptocurrency held by the company or otherwise properly pledged under the arrangement. It avoids an initial asset sale, but restricts access to collateral and exposes it to liquidation.

How fast can you get a crypto business loan?

Timing depends on approval, company verification, collateral receipt and payout settlement. Confirm usable funds before making a time-sensitive business commitment.

Do crypto business loans require a credit check?

Often no. These loans are typically underwritten against your crypto collateral, not your credit score or business revenue.

What happens if bitcoin’s price falls during the loan?

If prices fall, your loan-to-value ratio rises. You may need to add collateral or repay part of the loan. If no action is taken, the lender can liquidate collateral.

How are interest rates set on crypto business loans?

Each product has its own pricing. Ledn's published tiers depend on the amount of each loan, not simply a lower chosen LTV. Compare actual APR and fees for the same net proceeds and expected repayment date.

How does Ledn fit into crypto business lending?

Ledn’s bitcoin-backed loans have clear LTV thresholds, defined liquidation rules, and proof of reserves. Bitcoin used as collateral stays custodied and isn’t lent out for interest. Availability, terms, and rates depend on eligibility and jurisdiction.
